A friend of a friend has offered me this lathe at about 1/3 the cost with stand. It's been hardly used. I was wondering if anyone had experience with this lathe, maybe some insight into grizzly lathes? I've been thinking of moving to a larger lathe and using my desktop lathes for more specific tasks. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time.

I don't know much about big lathes but looks alike a good deal for you.

I'm sure that you could find some task that you could do with it.

Make ferrule tenons or something. Joint protectors.

Just teasing. Wish I could find a deal like this.

Don't get much for free in Canada so for approx 1000, I would be on it pretty quick.

I could possibly figure out a way to get a crane boom to go down the basement stairs.

I haven't even thought about how I I would move it or even where I would put it. My shop floor won't support that much weight lol. Guess if I get it, it'll be time to move the shop into the garage!

Grizzly lathe

I have had this lathe since 2003 (I think). It popped a capacitor early on but other than that no issues. A machinist friend from work scoffed at my stock 3 jaw chuck until he tried repeatedly to get it to read >.001", he even took the chuck off and put it back on. Eventually he said "you got lucky". I bought a new Smithy BZ-39 20 years ago, it's runout always measures .002-.004", has popped about a dozen capacitors, has had 2 motor rebuilds, numerous switches replaced. Smithy may be better now but my experience tells me I would go with Grizzly again. The gear drive on the Grizzly is considerably noisier than the belts on the Smithy but I will take the convenience of change levers over getting inside to change the belt to a different set of pulleys.

I have plenty of lathes, but if this was offered to me barely used for a grand. I would have one more!

Lol I I had a 16ft ceiling in my garage so I basically built a loft towards the forward part of my garage. Triple 2x10's spanned across 16ft with no center support other than center support chain tied into a ceiling joist. 2x4's 12" on center across the entire loft to give me as much support as possible without losing any head room underneath. All my wood and machines are supported by that floor. It's a relatively small shop but it's been working for me so far.

Don't see a problem... park the car in the driveway:)

I just bought one... I love it...

It cuts through stainless like butter...

Getting it moved will be a *****. If you can I would suggest trying to leave the stand attached when you move it, although it may be a bit top heavy then.

Getting it on the stand is a *****, but it's well worth it, IMO...

If your ceiling has joists that will support 1000+ lbs, it will be easier. I had to use cherry pickers...
