Is the rugged like a soft case with no rigged material under the vinyl ? I am interested in them so any info on them.

The rugged cases have a woven nylon exterior, not vinyl, but as others have said it surrounds a very solid oval tube. I'll add my vote for them, really fantastic cases, especially considering their low price. I have purchased multiples because I liked them so much, have a new 1x2 on the way now.

I have a 4x8 rugged ultimate. Best case I have ever owned as far as protecting the cues.

If you do not need pretty or one of a kind, I don't think you could buy a better case.

I'm calling John to order his 3x4 to use for tournaments.

Great guy to do business with as well.

I have the same case and couldn't agree more. Probably the best billiard oriented purchase I've made.

JB Ultimate Rugged Cases are great, I don't think anything else is even comparable for the money. I just got a 4*8 Butterfly for myself and a 4*8 and 3*6 Ultimate Rugged to keep handy in case anyone wants to buy one. Get them while John is in the states to save on shipping. One of my good friends has a leather 4*8 of a similar design by JB and it is awesome as well. You cant go wrong with a JB Case, IMHO.

I just got my JB basic rugged,it was ordered direct from John. I tweaked it a bit and got just what I wanted.
This case is so cool I don't even want to use it. I may order another one to use so I can keep this one just for looken at.

John really hit a home-run with these cases. He created a paradigm shift in the case market. There are now three categories as a result of this case
1) sub basic rugged
2) the basic rugged
3) leather semi or full custom

I say this with the following in mind;
I am not in the market for a $50-90 case (category 1) although some might be.
There isn't a chance, now knowing what I know now about the quality of these cases and the jb ultra-pad I would ever purchase another case in the $125-400 range (instroke, vincitore, its george, porper, you name it).The rugged, in my opinion eliminated this category.

Therefore, the only next tier is the high end semi and full custom.

I own 2 rugged cases and just placed an order for a leather custom with John. I am holding true to my word that I will be replacing ALL my cases with JB cases.

To those that do not own a JB, please do yourself a favor and get one. The rugged makes that easy.

Nice job of tweaking that Basic into an Ultimate.

The initials are a nice touch too.

I am working with a friend to order a leather tooled jbcase for him, and I will order a customized rugged for me also. I am noting on the details. the great thing about JB cases is that the shop can customize everything to your specs and liking.

imo, this is the best protection case. for the sizes it serves well for all purposes: 3x6 or 4x8 would be perfect for storage, the cues in those will stand up perfect all the time. the 2x5/3x4 are ideal for travelling, smaller 2x3 or 1x2 are great for both travelling and storing high end custom cues.

I own several high-end cases and find myself now opting for
my 3x6 JB Rugged over all the other cases. John Barton has
created THE perfect cue case with the Rugged Series.

Do these fit a cue ball in the pocket, or is it possible to have him put a larger pocket on it?

im afraid you nailed it

you can't deny a good deal on a good product, there are case makers I consider artists, as well as cue makers that are artists, and as beautiful as these custom cues & cases are, their prices make it difficult to bring to a poolhall, especially in NYC where I live, so for $100 I get a well built case I dont mind messing up, its a win win.
