I regretfully somehow got placed into making a shaft for a scorpion cue. I don't have the tap. Can anyone help out? Thanks....:)

Can you give us a hint as to the pitch and diameter ? A pic would help also. Why did you take a job that you knew you couldn't do ?

All these new screwball threads keep me in a tizzy. Why are they needed may I ask? When I need a pin for polishing while in the shop I can cut one pretty quickly but it seems that at every tournament I do there pops up another oddball and I'm stuck with no thread cutting ability.

Not sure what model the shaft is for or if the pin sizes are the same, but I just happen to have a unused scorpion Sp here that's left over from older stock. I tried measuring the pin, the dia. is something around .357, so in the 3/8 range, but It looks to be about 14tpi? Greg

Added- looks like 3/8-14 taps are pretty scarce to none, so other then having one custom made, the only option may be to grind the threads under power with a thread mill.

I've got one but it sounds more like a pin for a Cuetech. That tap is slightly smaller than 3/8-14. I think it's something like 9mm-14.

the scorpion uses the same joint as the cuetec. it's commonly referred to as a 3/8x14, but i believe it is actually 9mm x 14

I believe this is the correct answer, I have a couple joint pins and thats how they measure out.

The pin I'm measuring is 9.12mm up against the joint, and tapers down gradually to around 9.5mm at 1/4 of and inch or so from the end of the pin.

3/8 x 14 thrd. taps are readily available from the larger tool houses.
If the pin/thread in question is the same as a CueTec, the 3/8 x 14 tap will work if the peaks of the thrds. are ground down to around .360". This can be done on a lathe with a toolpost grinder or take it to a pro tool grinder and have him do it. Once the tap is to size, you will need to install a blank phenolic insert in the shaft. Drill/tap and finish. The tap is very inexpensive and needs very little 'tweaking' to make it work.

Try Production Tool (800.992.0092) or Wholesale Tool (800.521.3420). Both are located in Detroit.

Those freaken things are an off size 3/8 ? it is easier to change the pin that try and figure out that import crap!!!!!!

It's an odd ball pin I had a .372 x 14 tap made for the cue tec. Fits nice and snug. It is the same pin size you are looking for. They will break it off in you for the tap. About $100.00 is what I spent.

Thanks for all your help. I guess cuetec and scorpion want to make things a little difficult so customers would have to purchase only from them. Graphite and fiberglass are great materials for boats, not cues.:)

I think atlas sells this pitch as a matter of fact they do...
Don't know if it is the smae thread but a phone call could clear this up...

Thanks for the info John.:) I don't remember seeing those 14tpi taps before. I must have missed them somehow, or I may would have picked one up with My last order. I got one of the piloted 10tpi taps last time, and it works very well. I got that super long 16tpi tap for weight bolts too, but haven't used that one yet. The one I was using before just wasn't long enough, so it should help.

I sent an email asking if it was a full 3/8", or more like 9 mm undersized to fit the Cuetec and other imports. For what it is worth, someone wrote back and said he didn't know what size cuetec was, and doesn't have any metric taps.

I believe that tap from Atlas is for a Mike Bender cue. I know that I have a 3/8-14 tap and when I used it to make an insert for a Cuetech the fit was very loose on the pin.

Ask Atlas if someone in that organization owns a set of calipers and ask them to measure the S.O.B. though it will have to wait til Monday now.

I considered sending back nearly that exact comment. Since I thought my 1st email was pretty clear what I was asking, I decided to leave the general manager alone. I don't really know who to communicate with now that Chad is gone.

Yeah, now that I think about it, I bet It is for a Bender like Dick mentioned. besides the cuetec and scorpion that's the only other cue I have found any info on in searches that's in the general range of the same thread pattern. There may be others, but that's the only one I ran accross in a few quick searches that I made the other day.
