I thought he came to the right place since a few here have actual experience.
So, just do it .
Material ? How much does that material cost ? $5?

Floyd, you are correct. The mock-up I did looked ok (I took a piece of an old house cue shaft I use for repairs and installed the ferrule as I proposed), then cut it off where the ferrule met the shaft. There were no gaps around the “tenon”, but after some responses I read here, I did not want take the chance I would ruin a $250.00 shaft. As I’ve done on many occasions, I have taken the accumulated experience of top notch, qualified cue makers and repairmen on AZBilliards to guide my decisions and actions. Thanks again to all who took the time to help.Tom looked to save a little time and material.

Joey do you live thread the ferrule and the tenon or use a tap to build the ferrule?View attachment 624186
Works for me. A lot less likely to develop gaps at the bottom. Cleaner lines from the get-go.
Takes more time and money to do.
Any monkey can drill and ream a hole for a press fit.

Now we're up to 71 and counting...................
I've thought of doing that, emulating what they do with cf shafts just to see what it played like. After reading this thread thought it was a poor idea.I’m thinking about installing a new ferrule without a tenon. Instead of a tenon, I will cut a solid ferrule blank down to 5/16 inch for 3/4 inch, then epoxy this into a 5/16 inch x 3/4 inch hole in the shaft. I’m sure others have done this; just wondering what the results were and what I can expect my results to be. Thanks.
I had not, nice. Normal tenon thread?dendweller did you read post #38?
No tenon, 1 piece ferrule threaded into shaft.I had not, nice. Normal tenon thread?
No, I was asking what the thread was, 5/16 18?No tenon, 1 piece ferrule threaded into shaft.
After talking to a couple other cue makers in my area, it appears the shafts that are breaking with this style of ferrule. The ferrule material is too hard/stiff and not enough lateral give. I have miscued on hard shots and... well it's loud but no problems.
To this day still no issues with mine... and I break & play with it. 3 years on the same layered tip & it's around 75% left.
I decided on 5/16-18. I wanted to go 1/4-20 don't think the smaller diam the wood grain could stand up to impact without tearing. One of my 'toys' in the mid-late 70s didn't hold up so it was decided out of experience. No, I was asking what the thread was, 5/16 18?
What did you use for material?
Thanks, Joe
