Installing Joint Pin

When installing a joint pin, to ensure you have a perfect hole, do any of you use a small boring bar?
If so, where did you get it?
I would assume it would have to be quite thin and around 4" long?
I am interested in finding one if they exist. I have done some searching, but have come up dry so far.
Thanks!

Thanks!
I was looking at this one, but I wasn't sure if it would be long enough to do a joint pin install.

What kind of pin?
For 3/8 barreled radial pin, I bore .312 by 1.5 inches deep then drill out the bottom to 2.25 or so. Tap the hole then rebore for the barrel (.370-372 depending on the pin ).
I fill up the bottom tap clearance with 1/4 long wood ( I hate wasting epoxy and I do not like air down there ).
Micro 100 sells long boring bars too.

Or that place.

the barrel on mine are .382" or so.i drill the hole deep enough for the pin with .290" then follow with .312"(both bits are 3 flute solid carbide so they won't walk)the bore a hole .382" about 1.3" deep for the barrel.then i clean the bored hole out with the tap which is actually a hair over .382",maybe .002" bigger and then tap.

my boring bar is small but probably only about 2" long.i think the smallest it bores is .325".

I had some made up that are .250 and can bore 3" deep. I think I paid $40-$50 each for them. I can't remember where I got them, but I did post it here a year or so ago.

I got mine from J&L Industrial Supply. It is 6" long and can bore a 1/4" hole. I made the holder to work with my Deluxe Cuesmith. I like the double screws because it holds the boring bar alot more secure to the crosslide. 1.jpg

you dont need to bore the entire depth of the pin. I use the bar to get a perfect hole started around 1/2-3/4in deep then use a bit for the rest. As long as you start good the bit won't wobble. I just use the one from chris.

After the pin is in while still wet and still chucked up I get my cutting tool really close and spin by hand looking for movement between the very tip of the pin and the tool. . If there is I find the closest point and nudge the pin with my cutting tool until perfect.

Chris shows you all the in his videos best 100$ you can spend

I went to J&S tools sight and got scared when I saw the prices of the 6 inch boring bars (most in the 2 to 300.00 range) but then found the one that you are probably referring to that will bore as low as .245 for around 82.00. I'll probably order one shortly. I am now using one that only cost 16.00 but is only 4 inches long but .312 is the smallest that it will bore. The one I have does not use replaceable inserts.

here is a pic of the one from chris hightower. i believe it is 35$ then 8$ for the tool post. i use it to face cut tips and ferrules bore holes. literally everything. its stays sharp a looong time. i use it more then any cutting tool i have.

I bought mine in Sept 2001. I paid $83.39 . It came with 10 inserts, case and shipping. It was on sale, have not seen it on sale since.
