Instructional Materials About Banking

I'm loooking at getting the banking instructional material from Freddy the Beard. In general, I feel that I would get more out of the presentation of information in DVD format, PROVIDED that it is done sufficiently well. But, I'd rather have the books if they are more thorough with banking information (I'm not very concerned one way or the other about having the war stories though).

So, should I go with the books or the DVD's? Below is what I believe to be the complete line up of the books and DVD's. Let me know if I'm missing anything. Also, is any of this redundant? If later releases are just updated versions that cover everything in the earlier versions, please let me know.

I would also like to know if the books and DVD's are actually complimentary in terms of having information that does not overlap. I might get the books AND the DVD's.

I have both Freddy's books and DVD's both are good, you can't go wrong with either or both. Brumback's DVD is also good.

Both books and both DVDs stand on their own. 50 yrs of experience is not easily able to be compressed into a couple of books or a couple of DVDs. I believe there is no limit to the amount of knowledge that one can accumulate in bank pool; but my two books and two DVDs will certainly get you off to a good start.

Both books and both DVDs stand on their own. 50 yrs of experience is not easily able to be compressed into a couple of books or a couple of DVDs. I believe there is no limit to the amount of knowledge that one can accumulate in bank pool; but my two books and two DVDs will certainly get you off to a good start.

Thanks Freddy, but I'm not sure I understand the answer completely. From what you just said I'm sure I could get both books or I could get both DVD's with little or no overlap - "they stand on their own"....

But is there duplication comparing "the books as a package" to the "DVD's as a package"?

If not, then I'd like to ask, should I start with the books or the DVD's? I'm more of a visual learner, so I would prefer DVD's, but when it comes to banking, I need to start from the ground up, and I'm wondering if some of the items are any more basic than the others.

Actually, that's a question I should have asked right there. Do these books start at the beginning? Or are they advanced banking techniques? About all I know about banking is this; angle in doesn't really equal angle out, cushions rub the object ball giving it a little spin and hard shots shorten the angle. And that is just about all I know about banking.

If they all stand on their own, perhaps you could list all four in a sequence that's best for a banking neophite.

IMHO, the first book, "Banking With The Beard" is about as well done as you could possibly expect for specific subject matter. It starts with basics and gets fairly advanced from there. It does an excellent job of covering and explaining speed and English required to adjust for the rails. If you just mastered what was covered in this book, you'd be a great banker.

Second book is more stories than instructional. However, very well written and if you're a pool fan, more than worth the money.

I've not seen the DVDs. The first book has excellent illustrations.

I'd also highly recommend the two DVDs put out by John Brumback if you want to learn advanced banking.

I think the answer lies somewhere within yourself. Do you learn more from reading a book or from a visual lesson. Personally I think that both are better because you can absorb the information two ways instead of one.

I will speak only about the First Book and DVD as I dont have the second set.

The Book and DVD cover the exact same subject matter. A couple of things are covered on the DVD that isnt in the book. However, that being said, I feel both are necessary. The book is invaluable to me because it has the illustrations I can keep referring back to (and still do from time to time.) The DVD is important to me because I get to see the speed of the shots. Freddy described the speed well in the book, but seeing it on DVD made all the difference to me.

If you could only have one, I would recommend the DVD. If able to afford both, hands down, that would be my answer. I have no doubt there is value in the second set as well but honestly never felt the need to go beyond what he taught me in the first set.

I will be getting Brumbacks set next. I only tell you this to let you know that I dont feel I am missing anything from Beards material at all. Im a training hound and like to have everything I can on as many subjects.

A single bank you can nail in a game can easily justify the cost of Freddys material IMO. Bank on Brother (tm Beard!)

I really dont know how to answer your question. To start with, we aint talking about a down payment on a house. So far in 10 years, no one has as yet, asked me for their money back. That should tell you something. Each product has its own intrinsic value. The DVD, Banks That Dont go -- But Do, comes the closest to be a separate entity. It includes 47 different amazing "Trick" banks, specialty shots that can be played in a game, along with everything you would need to know to be able to make them yourself. But in order to really do well with these banks you should have incorporated the principles that I establish in the other 3 units.

If I had to suggest what to buy first -- and I had a gun to my head -- i would probably suggest that you start with the DVD, Banking With The BEard -- The Movie.

The 2nd book, The GosPool, along with half the book devoted to war stories, covers the whole gamut of banking positions that repeat themselves all over the table and easy ways to determine where the shot is lying and how to handle it. Bank systems that can be found nowhere else on this earth.
