Interesting Experience in the Pool Room

I just walk in the pool room with my cue and case over my shoulder and this young guy walks over to me and says, "You live around here?". I'm thinking to myself, "Why in the hell would he want to know if I live around here?" then I realize that he is just young and naïve about what questions you ask of a stranger. So, I just nod that I do and wait. He says, "You play pool?" and I nod again, this time adding a yes and he says, "You want to play a game with me?" and I hesitate because I don't just hit balls with anyone. I'm not a prima donna but I am particular about who I play pool with. I like the other player to have the same respect for the game and for people that I do and if they don't, they can find someone else to play with.

The guy rambles on about something about him being a marine and I'm like "COOL", so I tell him "Semper Fi" and I then ask him if he is still in the Marine Corps and he finally explains that he works in the marine industry but he has a lot of respect for the "Marines", so I just blow that off to youth and ask him what game he wants to play. He says "Eight Ball" and I say OK and ask him to break and he says I can break. Now, I can tell this guy might go off for some cash because, well, he's young and full of himself and he has excess money. Well he must have had excess money because he was buying lots of shots and other alcohol.

So I now realize that he is drinking pretty good and I don't take advantage of people who drink heavily but I am curious about what he really wants. So, I break and run the first rack which was difficult but managed to run out the rack. He's like, "wow" and he racks the balls and I do it again and he is like, "WOW", "You are really good" and goes on to tell me how good he is as compared to the people in the marine industry, how he just cleans their clock and I just listen. Then he tells me that he wants to play me regularly because he can learn a lot from me and then he will be able to put an even bigger ass whipping on the rest of the people in the marine industry. Now his friends are chiding his ass, telling him that they will bet $500 that I will beat him the next game. He looks a little irritated with those comments from his friends but we play one more game and I can't run out and so I miss a couple of shots and he is jazzed about being at the table but can't run out the rack either, even with a few innings at the table. I manage to win that rack too and reach out to shake his hand and thank him for the play and he shakes my hand and now he wants me to teach him how to play pool. By now, I don't want to play anymore and I don't particularly think he really wants to "learn how to play pool" but just wants to know how to kick the next guy's ass for money so I tell him that I give pool lessons but that I am a little on the expensive side. He then gets real close to me and says, "I don't want to pay for any pool lessons. You're old, don't you have any grandsons or anyone that you want to leave your knowledge with? ":D I then tell him I have a son but that I have a really expensive lifestyle and travel all over the world playing pool and I need to make sure I cover my expenses and he is just flabbergasted that I still don't want to give him pool lessons for free. We part company and he goes back to drinking and I go up front to play some on the other tables with one of the other regulars and to his credit, he walks up to me and drops off a bud light and I tell him no thank you but he insists, so I accept the drink. He talked to the bartender and found out I drink bud light so I guess it was his way of thanking me for playing a couple of games of pool with him. He didn't say anything else but went back to drinking with his friends. I asked the bartender how much he had to drink and the bartender remarked that he had spent over $250 on himself and three other friends. He wasn't stumbling around and neither were his friends and they didn't cause any trouble so I figured he was a good customer for Buffalo Billiards in Metairie.

So do you think I should play him again if he asks?

Joey Joey Joey! Ain't pool fun? You never know who you will meet in a poolroom!

if he is sober and really wants to learn, sure. if not NO. He showed some class by not bothering you further and buying you a drink. I would give him a little credit and just play it by how you feel the next time you see him.

I run into this all the time in the bars we play in. People ask to play then they ask for lessons and I'm more than willing to share my knowledge with them. I learned a long time ago when I was a young army lad that teaching something can make you mo betta yourself ! Anyway most of them don't want to learn; they just want you to show them some magical shot that will help them beat the world ! Then they go back to drinking and playing and if they beat me a game they go around braggin. It is what it is...... takes all types to make up this great world we live in !

Nothing wrong with how this young man handled himself. By your account, he wasn't obnoxious, indeed, he was rather respectful to all the unwritten pool room rules. Despite the amounts of alcohol consumed, he even managed to control his behavior, too. The fact that he bothered to buy you a drink, in a show of gratitude, at least shows you he was raised correctly. IMO, there can be no harm in playing him again. Even imparting some "free" knowledge. Who knows. He may have some potential. It's fair to say that you never got to see what he knows, or doesn't know, in the 3 games you and he played. Maybe he'll prove to be a loyal friend who won't be an unnecessary burden? You never know.

Joey it sounds like you handled this entire situation with class. This kid sounds like he is cocky but weren't we all at that age. If he asks you to play again then I bet you might see a more humble side of this guy.

Sorry.

I'd much rather play a guy who knows how to run a table versus one who just know how to run his mouth.
Life is just to short.

I find it interesting that you (Joey A) finds this guy's behavior 'interesting'. It's an everyday occurrence in most pool rooms in my area. LOL!
