Interesting scenario from an old match on video

I'll just stick to giving him the benefit of the doubt. I've seen videos of him making shots that seemed impossible. Granted that doesn't mean it's the correct shot.

They guys doing the commentary often don't have a good view of the table. It happens on the streams a lot.

Wait, with a far inferior view you can make the correct judgement?

We have a better view then Miz probably did. I have been to a lot of those tournaments. He used to sit in a booth with a plastic front on it so their conversation could not be heard by the players.
He may be like 30 feet away most of the time watching on a small 19" low def screen.

On our computers we have a better view then Miz did with our, larger screens, HD. We can zoom in for a better view of the shot. Play it, replay it, study it and have the advantage of knowing what happened.

We can easily criticize a call without feeling we are putting anyone down. If Miz could have done what we can do he would never miss a call. Unfortunately, his is being done in real time and mistakes are made. It doesn't matter who he is.

Commentators are saying all the time after a shot things like,
"Oh, he was able to make it, I didn't think the 5 ball would go past the 7 ball."
No big deal, they are wrong all the time.

This video link is timestamped to take you to the shot being discussed: https://youtu.be/jT3b5kX9M4U?t=2h38m23s

I captured to shot in the image below. Drawing straight back wouldn't seem an option. A draw with heavy outside can take the CB to the rail left of the top center pocket in the image. Easy to underplay this and scratch this shot or to overhit it and lose the CB.

The 3 rail is by far the best shot. Just have to get plenty of inside english on it.
Yours is a good illustration. On a shot like the 3/4 railer when the cue ball hits the forth rail the reverse kills the cue ball and it falls perfect. The shot is almost fool proof. I am sure all of us would be real happy if we always had a shot as easy as that to win with. Kim just hit it so horribly thats all.

Thanks. On this type of pattern, it takes nearly twice the speed to reach the 5th rail due to the check/reverse/hold-up on the 4th rail.

First, thanks to arenaldo for posting the match. Mizerak did a great job of laying out the shot and the options.

Two things:

First, a lot of 9 ball players go for "area" position. I believe that's what Kim was doing, he knew 3 rails would get him a shot. What he discounted was the scratch.

I'm far from a great player but to me, the decision of whether to go forward three rails or draw the ball depends on which shot you are more confident in. I'd have probably drawn the ball because I'm more confident in the angle coming up table than I am in exactly where the cue ball will hit on the third rail.

The decision to go 3 rails may have cost him the match.

That 3 rail shot was the right one, I'd say 90% of players would have played it that way. I don't think any pro would have played it going the other way.

I think Kim had too much follow on the cue ball and it flattened after the second cushion. Slippery, new cloth. He mentioned the slide as he left the table.

I'm sure you are a good player, good enough to know how you would play this shot successfully for your game.

Steve Mizerak was one of the best, if not the best, shot makers to walk the Earth. I'm confident if he said that shot was possible, it was.

The 8 ball was not frozen and his cue was crossing the rail only slightly above the third diamond. I'm a banger and I could draw that ball up table beyond the side pocket. The shot was possible. High inside gets position on the 9 ball but flirts with the side pocket. They only way to scratch in the side drawing the ball is if you don't get enough low outside on the cue ball.

It looks to me like he either didn't use enough english or the english didn't take enough off the first rail. New cloth can do that to you sometimes. It wants to slide instead of grab.
It looked to me like he hit rail first, flattening the angle off the first rail. Follow alone got him to the second (short) rail, at too shallow an angle. You can see he had plenty of side spin by the angle off the third rail - from near the corner pocket all the way up to the side pocket.
