When I shoot down on the ball like that on a force follow shot I have trouble with the cue ball leaving the surface of the table after contacting the object ball.

That is a great video. One thing I never see mentioned in these endless elbow drop discussions - is wrist articulation. If u watch any accomplished player carefully including this vid, wrist never stays fully locked in a fixed grip angle. Its often very minor, but some flex is always there, and gives a pure piston stroke somewhat of a downward followthru also, similar to minor elbow drop, often but not always in tandem with minor elbow flex/drop.

No one “right” way. Its a fluid athletic motion.
