Does the pool hall where you normally play, have Wireless Internet access?

Would you be willing to pay for the access if it was included in your pool time at an additional cost?

Would you access AZBilliards at the pool hall if you had internet access? sorry my dumb question of the day.

Not me. I go to the pool room to get away from that stuff.

WiFi should be free...no charge.

It's really just an attraction to get people in the door. So, you can sell them drinks. It pays for itself.

I agree with this but I also believe having wifi at a pool hall as a positive thing. You can watch plenty of great youtube vids with good information on pool.

Hi Tom, there is WiFi where I play at most. I don't bring my laptop in to use the signal, nor does anyone else there. But Greensboro, NC ain't the big city, and perhaps it's a case by case demographic thing...

Pool is an escape

Exactly! Been in I.T. for over 20 years (been involved in the creation of a couple of RFCs in the early hey-day of the Internet), and I've learned there is a limit to the number of hours in a day when I want to see a computer screen in front of my face. Back in my early "go-get-'em,-give-up-yer-personal-life-to-advance-yer-career" twenties, I'd not even bat an eye at bringing a laptop to a pool hall (albeit "Internet access" even by a network cable was a rare commodity in those days, much less "laptops" and "wireless access"). As I hit my thirties and forties, I pretty much got sick of the computer intruding upon those things I wanted to do that really didn't involve a computer (e.g. pool/billiards, spending time with family/friends, etc.).

In fact, to dodge the gratuitous requests to come over and fix someone's personal computer (which always happens someone finds out what I really do), when someone in the pool room asks me "what I do for a living," I answer something to the effect of "organic potato chip snack-bag filler" or something to that effect. Love the "deer in the headlights" look I get.

The pool hall I play at has free wifi from the coffee shop next dooor  , but I don't use it, nor would I be willing to pay to use it. I go to the pool hall to play pool. :grin-square:

From the business stand point, there are some good reasons to get wi-fi in the pool room.

More NEW traffic, ppl might stay a little longer and eat and drink more. We can do our own streaming video.

The cost of cable tv to the room can be recovered by charging a small pay pal fee for daily use. IP Phones, Cable TV and Internet access at high speeds would cost what the old 'just cable TV' was being charged.

Remote Security camera access is also a plus.

Free wireless... wow... never thought anything was FREE. As far as I know there are only two places in Sacramento that have Free wireless. One is a popular restaurant and the other is Office Depot.

I also respect the 'escape' reason for pool halls. And the fact that I have never found anyone in a pool hall that talk shop with me. It is pool or nothing. But I do like to watch streaming videos in between matches.

Hi Tom

There is free Wifi at Kickshot Billiards in Northern Kentucky, but it is rare to see anyone using it.

I am not willing to pay table time to use the internet.

I am there to play pool.

I don't need to communicate with anyone. I have a cell phone if needed.

Since every Starbucks and Panera has Wifi for free coast to coast, I think it's really difficult to charge for it. (Would this mean the pool hall would have to have good coffee???) McDonalds is trying to get $1 per hour for it and I have yet to see anyone using a notebook computer in them as a result.

I think having it adds to what a room can offer; non players may be more willing to come if they can catch up on emails while their other half plays. Great source to settle bets made on events as well as other reasons stated here.

WiFi

Many ? most new juke boxes have it built in so you can pick a song and the box plays it from the internet. They have it where I play, a few people come by and just use the access. Some pool players come, and play Poker online if there's no action.
PS; there's no charge.

Every Starbucks I've been to charges for wireless.

Panera is a Mid West restaurant we had them in Cincinnati when I lived there... great coffee and bagels selections.

Good coffee in a pool room? that would be really nice.

Yeah, the pool room i go to has the jukebox wireless thing.

I use it to play poker in the room when there is no action.

But i would never pay for it. EVER.

I am liable to buy 7 or 8 dollars in soda killing time on HoldEm.
Which is probably more then i would spend on practice if there was no action.

Charge for it, and i am out the door.

No.

Yes.

We have free Wi-Fi at my pool hall. It is great. I don't normally take my computer up there though. I have an iphone and that is enough portable technology for me.

Depending on how dead business is, you can have free wifi, and offer lower rates for practice during certain hours (early bird special maybe?). This way, some people will use wifi to watch videos and use those videos to guide their practices. Idk about you guys, but theres always that feeling I get after watching a great shot made by a pro that makes me wanna drive out to the local pool hall and do the same shot.

Wifi

Wifi is not just for laptops!

It works my I-phone pretty well too!!

WIFI IS the nuts for ANY poolhall. Period. If you don't have it you're missing the boat.

1. Streaming
2. Training - Youtube, AZ, etc........
3. Reporting on tournaments - Brackets can be uploaded, play by play can be done.
4. You can check your e-mail & AZ. J/K

We should petition for ALL pool halls to have FREE WIFI!!

Edited to add: Most of the benefits of WIFI are a benefit to the room/business.(added publicity)
I would never pay for WIFI anywhere. most of the time.

Yes it does and no I wouldn't be willing to pay for it. Wireless access is getting to be pretty much a given for gathering places and I think it's something that a smart business offers as an additional attraction. With the advent of phones that are pretty much small computers with browsers it should be pretty open and easy to connect to the internet from any WiFi hotspot.

I show people things all the time from AZ Billiards and YouTube that are billiards related while I am at the poolroom.

Starrbucks in China doesn't charge and neither does McDonalds here.

In the USA I LOVE to go to Panera because not only do they have free WiFi BUT they have yummy stuff. I am totally jonesing for a cranberry Turkey sandwich RIGHT NOW!! :-(

I ONLY pay for wifi access if I am desperate. Otherwise I like to find a place that offers wifi for free and spend my money on sustenance while I am there.

Poolrooms can totally benefit from free wifi - more bodies in the room means more revenue.

In Xiamen they even have a traveling tournament comprised of people who are active on a certain chat channel online and they only play in places where wifi is present so that they can be on chat while the tournament is happening - this is like 40-50 people who organize their own tournaments online and play them out at local poolrooms.
