Intriguing 1918 Photo

According to the Blue Star Mother's web site, the organization did not exist in 1918.

It sure looks cold in the Liberty Hut.

That's actually a very cool photo site. They have some excellent vintage photos on a variety of topics.

Check out this one with the pool boys called "Our Gang" from 1909: One way to control the street boys. A common scene in the Bancroft-Foote Boys Club, New Haven, Connecticut.

Look at this beautiful table with inlays.

There's something just plain creepy about this dude:

New York, 1909. Balkline billiards champion Calvin Demarest, six years before he was committed to an insane asylum after attacking his wife with a knife. He died in 1925 at the age of 37.

You can tell he's hiding something the way he's holding his hands in this picture.:eek:

This Calvin has creepy eyes: Noted Billard Player Expires in Illinois Insane Asylum": CHICAGO, Feb. 22. Calvin S. Demarest, former amateur champion billiard player and later a professional, died at the Elgin Asylum for the Insane last night. Demarest suffered a nervous breakdown last June and attacked his wife with a knife. She was saved from serious injury by Demarest's mother. The billiardist was taken for treatment to a rest cure, but failed to improve and was removed to the asylum. As it turned out, Calvin was very much alive. In 1925, though, he died before his time.

More Shorpy

This is from another post in the Billiard and Pool History section:

Just a sample of the great collection of old time photos from Shorpy.
There is a reference to "pool" or "billiards" in each one.

Lots of awnings and overhead wires.
Everyone wore a hat.
