Introduction and a question

Hi all! My name is mark, from the uk, played english pool for last 20 years but tried out the american version a year ago and im addicted! I consider myself capable of playing to a decent standard i.e I can run 4/5 racks in 8,9 or 10 ball.
Now,after having a nosey through loads of forums/instructionals etc over the past couple of weeks it seems like theres so much i could learn to further improve my game. So...i stumbled across this "pivot" instructional. Then it pops up in a number of threads. So...i went away and tried it. It worked. however, it felt very unnatural to pivot while already down on the shot.indeed i had to re-align my approach to enable me to pivot. i found myself pivoting to the point where i would normally just approach the shot with everything in line.
My question is what the heck is the pivot all about?
I am genuinly trying to learn about this game to give myself a better chance of progressing further in all the tournaments that i play in. Any help would be gratefully appreciated. thanks

leedschief...Welcome to the forums. The pivot is not necessary. Look at the MAJORITY of top players, anywhere in the world (UK included). Almost none of them shoot with this pivot, for most shots (I use the pivot occasionally). If it was the "holy grail" claimed by some, don't you think everybody would be using it all the time? Not saying it can't work (it does for some people, some of the time), but it is not used by most of the best players. That should tell you something. Keep it simple!

leeds, your game is already at a pretty high level it sounds like. Learning an aiming system that uses the pivot will not bring you from an A player to a AAA player. You already clearly know how to aim and make balls. I'm not an A and I've never seen you shoot so I can't say what will take your game to the next level. I would suspect it's more mental than question of potting balls.

Welcome!!!

I think the pivot is a method of aiming/shooting that compensates for squirt and swerve when applying english. The shaft is "angled off" a bit vs a non-pivot comventional shot. I think a lot of good players use the pivot method called BHE (back hand english), however, they don't pivot. They just get down on the shot already being angled off.

Username "Dr Dave" has an awesome site that shows and explains this in slow mo video. I assume if you go to his profile page (go to search members), you'll see his site. DO go there, it's remarkable video with well done explanation on a boat load of pool shots.

Best regards,

Matt

If you can run 4 or 5 racks after a year of playing i would not look at any other system then what you are doing now. You don't need to change a thing.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. Is that 4 to 5 racks out of 10 or out of 100? hahaha!! If it's 4-5 out of 10 you might as well just go ahead and get out on the pro tour.

Leedschief....if you can run 4-5 racks of 8, 9 and 10, do I know you? If you are from Leeds (my home town), look me up. We have a lot of good players in Leeds, Bradford, Wakefield, Barnsley and Sheffield....many of which are on the UK Pro Tour. I play on the UK Tour too so it would be good to get another practice partner in Leeds.

PM me if you like.
