Hi all, I am no longer in Norfolk and instead am in Montana, still Jon, though!

The closest pool hall to me is 50 miles each way and I haven't a complaint about the place. There are four 9' diamonds, one 10' 3c, one 12' snooker, and eight 7' diamonds. It's a bar table centered region. Another player and I have been battling at 1 hole over the last couple weeks and it has been great fun, but we both want more people locally to take it up.

Our thought is a tournament but are unsure how to handicap it or make it appealing to those that can and do play the game and those who dabble or are completely unfamiliar and just wanting to try it out. So, I ask the esteemed panel that is AZB forums for all input, not at how to save pro pool, but how can I grow the game of one pocket local to me?

And, as an aside, would 1p with nine balls racked work on a 7' table?

1p with 9 balls will work on a 9 foot table as well
its a good way to get people interested since there are more opportunities to be offensive
also you can have them play games to 3 or 4
less likely to get in to an uptable game which turns off many rotation players making the switch
next to last
1 ball one pocket is another way to get them interested.
last you can get them to play back pocket 9 ball
basically 9 ball and 1 ball onepocket mixed
thats all i got
good luck

Since you two have some skill, my suggestion is to ask two more players to have a partners game. Each of you take a newbie and make it so you allow coaching. Just be careful to not let the coaching take too much time. It works.

I am John from Montana, sorry man, you have to move. Can't be 2 of us in Montana 🤬🤬.
Just kidding, welcome to heaven on earth

If it was less strictly competitive, you could do it as a swiss league (people with similar results play each other - although it doesn't work so well with small numbers) or a handicap system. You could have a short 'how to play' coaching session or Q&A to help people learn.

"short" 1P may be best with a 10 ball rack vs a 9 ball rack since you still have the triangle rack for a more or less normal break.

I'm already spotting you the "H"... and, I was born in Billings, so it's welcome back!

Where are you and do you play 1p? What can I do to pique your interest in the game if not?

If you rack 10 you can still win at five. Such situations happen all the time in games with spots. Dr. Dave recently posted a bunch of YouTube videos on one pocket topics.
This is true. You can also play sudden death and play 1 ball 1 pocket or like somebody else shoot spotshots😉

Besides ending in a tie is still better then losing. I believe more games of 1 pocket end in a loss then a win-meaning the loser sells out.

It is somewhat important to preserve some semblance of a normal OP break which you can do with a 10 ball rack. If you want then to have an odd number of balls to play the game then just agree to remove one ball off the table after the break. I would suggest the ball closest to the spot should be removed, then you can play to 5 balls....

If you don't remove the extra ball, just play to five. The main effect is that at the end you are not fighting over a single ball. The extra ball on the table is not a problem. For beginners it's probably better to not have last-ball racks.

Let me know if Billings is ever in your travels... What's the 9' table situation in Missoula?

I've played in a bar racking 10 balls. I just gave the guy 6 5 to get rid of the argument, it's a bigger spot than if feels like it should be though.
