IPT London Event in October Cancelled

........ if money was the case then they would cancel the other non open events as well

On that point there's no official word from IPT yet that they've cancelled or rescheduled/relocated The Excel event so how would anyone know that they haven't or won't also cancel the other non-open event?

Hi everyone,
Well, as an Englishman living very close to London I'll be very disappointed indeed if this turns out to be correct. I've been looking forward to the tournament for some time. In particular I really hope that it hasn't been cancelled due to security concerns as that would send out completely the wrong message (we were all urged by your government to continue to visit the US in the wake of 9/11 so as to make sure that no-one could claim that terrorists had won- cancelling a pool tournament here on security grounds would fly in the face of that sort of sentiment).
Apart from all that it would have been a great boost to pool in this country which would have been welcomed.

Oh well, what can I do about it:mad:

Thanks,
Chris (Chrstc).

When I was in Las Vegas a few short weeks ago, I was conversing with a person who worked in the event production. We chatted about the tour, and in regards to England, I was explaining to him that I personally was not looking forward to going over to the other side of the pond. :p

He told me that there was a strong possibility that the event in England would not go forth and may be canceled, but at that time -- several weeks ago -- it wasn't 100-percent positive that it would be postponed or canceled.

Having said that, I believe IF the England event was canceled, it was not canceled because of terrorism or lack of monies from qualifiers.

Of course, is this a wild Internet rumor about England being canceled? Has anyone e-mailed the IPT and received a reply and/or confirmation that the England stop was, indeed, canceled?

Ask and you shall receive. That was lightning quick, but that's what is so cool about networking on AzBilliards.

I'd also e-mail Lindsey in case Deno is busy. He just had a new baby recently and must have has hands full.

Lindsey, BTW, did an EXCELLENT job in Vegas making sure things went smoothly. I'm sure she must have missed having Deno Andrews there, but I've got to give Lindsey a five-star rating. The event went smooth as silk.

Dear Sir
Thank you for your e-mail. The IPT Players 8-Ball Championship Event is not contracted yet that is why the show is not on our website. I'm confident that event will happen in Excel Centre - it's jus the matter of finalisation of a contract. What I can suggest to you is to keep on checking our website ' as soon as the show will be contracted it will appear on the web. Hope that helps.

Hi there JC51534,
That's more like it!! Hopefully the event will go ahead afterall, then. Great news for all of us here in the UK.

Thanks so much for posting that,

Chris (Chrstc).

I hope these rumours that the London event is cancelled are false, I think it would really hurt the IPT and it's exposure in the UK/Europe if it cancelled, notice that the IPT struggles to get a dozen players in it's European qualifiers?

JAM, your more likely to get struck by lightning then to be involved in a plane crash for any reason, stop watching CNN:p

I don't think it's either of those things, the amount of money the qualifiers bring in is no where close to the cost of the purse and production of the event, and it never will. Even at a $1500 entry fee, the amount from 25 qualifiers would be at best $300,000, if money was the case then they would cancel the other non open events as well, and they never would have held the events at such a first rate resort. I still feel the major problem is (was) a problem with the dates and location in London.

Your math is way off. Try doubling that amount and you will see it is not chump change.

His estimate doesn't seem to be that far off at US$ 300,000/-

The average attendance at the first 15 World Open Qualifiers has been almost exactly 12 players......25 x 12 @1,500 = US$450,000/- minus the 4 free places given away at each of the 25 events (4 x 25 x 1,500 = 150,000).....net income US$ 300,000/- :)

If it wasn't terrorism or lack of monies from qualifiers, then what other reason could be given? Does KT just not like the English? Maybe it is because all IPT players could not obtain a passport?

No, it's because when he asked Earl Strickland about it, Earl said, "ENGLISH FANS SUCK!!!" ;)

I do not know why the IPT English tour stop would be postponed or cancelled, but at this juncture, since there has not been an official IPT announcement, it's only rumor.

As far as passports, I'd imagine most of the players who do compete on the IPT have passports already. I mean, after all, it is the INTERNATIONAL Pool Tour! :p

Yep, your right it is the INTERNATIONAL Pool Tour so surely they should have tournaments in other places besides the USA and this rumor of canceling the tournament in England is most likely false.

Doubt if that is the answer since Mike Sigel has already made the statement that if the IPT "IS" successful it will be moving to Europe where they will have more of a fan base. He was over heard making this statement at the 14.1 world championships in New Jersey. And he also said that a deal was in the works (negotiations) for selling part of the IPT. So my conspiracy theory is this....

KT makes all the players exclusive to the IPT, Sells the IPT or a good Part of it and then moves it to europe.....how does that sound to everybody..After all. won't the IPT be worth substancially more with the exclusivity contracts and then won't it be more attractive to potential buyers.. So JAM....Don't take Keith and move to Europe if it happens... we all enjoy your company and writings way to much..........conspiracy...gotta love it...........mike

You did ask how it sounds Mike so........Devil's advocate for a minute:) ..........Not sure that exclusivity contracts or indeed any other contracts (e.g. any guarantees re minimnum earnings) between IPT and card holders would necessarily add anything at all to its value. The existence of contracts in some cases might even detract from its value. Not even sure whether IPT would have any significant sale value in the first place. What would the buyer be buying that he couldn't create from scratch for himself? What are IPT's assets and what are the millstones round it's neck and does the buyer have to take them both? If it became known that the owners of IPT were of a mind to get out of the business it might be cheaper for a potential tour operator owner to just sit it out and wait til they close up shop. They can then learn from any mistakes IPT might have made, form an appropriate tour and contract their own chosen players.

If you feel from an overheard conversation that MS or KT are confident of a larger fan base outside USA it should make you wonder why did they bother to start up a USA centred tour in the first place when they could have cut out the losses made in USA and gone straight to where fan base is.If,as you say,"KT sells IPT or a good part of it" the decision would in any case be almost cetainly no longer be up to him after he's sold it re whether or not to "take it to Europe" anyway. As an aside to that it is also likely that, other than the top 20 or so, American players would be of limited commercial value to any tour operating solely in Europe or The Far East, certainly of a lot less value than they are in America. Results so far i.e.... 7 Phillipinos and 6 Europeans in the top 14 are hardly symptomatic of any likely future dominance of the sport by Americans. So if your conspiracy theory was in any way correct, and I'm not saying it isn't, there probably wouldn't be that many American players involved in IPT long term anyway and everyone else in USA could go back to what they were doing before:)

Just light hearted food for thought, don't anyone go all shirty on me now;)
