IPT observations.

As for Archer saying he took Karen lightly????Why would Archer take ANY player lightly?
IIRC, he said that he took her lightly because she is a woman. I recorded it and will watch it again tonight but I'm 99% sure that that's what he said.

He also said something to her during the match when he had a poor break about "not racking the balls correctly on the spot?" Was the 1 ball suppose to be on the spot?

Im pretty sure Karen knows how to rack, and I dont mean that in a negative way. I also seriously doubt that she would try and bad rack someone.

For everyone's information the play by play man in the booth was Matt Vasgersan. He does the commentary for NBC's Head's Up poker championship which I enjoy, and I tend to think he's pretty good.

Exactly,

Regardless, Johnny has the option of looking at the rack and examining it before he breaks. Its not like he hasnt done it. Hell I have seen him do it for almost every rack Corey gave him in the 8ball tourny at Valley Forge. If he didnt examine the rack and broke it, thats his fault as much as it is Corr's. Her fault for giving a bad rack (not saying she did, if she did) and his fault for not checking it.

positive feedback for oln

All:

Would it make a difference if we, diehard poolfans, even though we didn't "fully" enjoy the KOH episode, give a thumbs up to OLN for taking on the show via email feedback to them? Would this up the chance for keeping Pool on TV? I would hate for pool to be a "fad" on TV for a little while... then all of a sudden die.

thoughts?

Overall the show was good. With so many first round matches I think they had to pick which matches to show. Using the reality TV formula they chose to pick the more "entertaining" and/or well known of the players and the matches where the women are playing the men for instant drama and to "hook" audiences in.

Hopefully in the late rounds they'll show more of the match.

Sigel's arrogant but I think he's playing it up for the show to add additional drama for the final matchup.

I think you are right, I also think it's a bad idea doing that. It is only going to make him look more like an ass when they see Efren Crush him (especially the first set 8 to 0).

It can't hurt. It seems they are beginning to carry more then their regular outdoor programming and feed back from the public would be good. Not just for the IPT but for future decisions on carrying billiard programming. I would hope the IPT will not be the only one promoting pool and wanting to get it on TV. I would like to see all pool tournaments on TV even those that are just local. Heck why not put on the bar league championships, they may pull the biggest audience of all. I always thought the bar leagues playing 8 ball with just everyday people playing could draw an audience. I wonder how many bar league players there are in this country, must be in the millions? Pretty good size market.

Yes. This is good. In TV shows, you may not notice it, but there are several "stories" going on simultaneously. And they will flip back and forth between the different ongoing "stories".

Then the stories will continue on the next show. Viewers will tune in to see what happens next.

The TV experts have this down to an exact science - Formulas which will get the highest ratings.

Example "the men vs the women". Who will win? Etc.

And Earl kept saying, "8-ball is too easy". But then he lost the match.

Jake

That's what he meant--he thinks 8-ball is too easy so it evens the playing field and then a player of Gerda's ability can actually beat Earl.

Professional Players?

Did it bother anyone else to see the constant unsportsman like conduct, and general whininess of the Pro Players. By keeping these ridiculous moments in the broadcast is this the Ipt's strategy for drawing in a larger audience? From what i saw the players just confirmed every bad stereotype the general public has about pool players.

Sigel isnt playing anything up at all. he really is a buttface at times.........lol however i like him..........

You know Im a lot more impressed with Gerda after this whole situation. Not to mention playing in that kind of event for the FIRST time. And who is she up against .. Mika - Deuel - and Earl - AND Earl got into her head and freaked her out and she beat him. Thats being strong and the other guys beat her but didnt destroy her. Id say her score against Deuel was pretty impressive especially after going through the Earl match. Im sure it was less that fun. Im still a huge Earl fan... always will be.

You're thinking of it as a sports program. Think of it as "reality TV" and you'll be closer to what I think they are trying to achieve. They're trying to follow Spike TV's "The Ultimate Fighter" format - which took a relatively unknown and unpopular sport and made it mainstream. Show the drama, show the bickering, etc. and you'll have people turned in to see what happens next.

They honestly could have edited all the whining, all the unsportsman like conduct, etc. out but they kept it in along with showing Earl, Keith and two men vs. women matches. See a pattern?

I had Tivo'd this yesterday, and just got around to watching it a few minutes ago.

A few things about this show bugged me, to varying degrees:

1) Sigel as the "current" KOTH to start? And this being the first KOTH event? Kinda cheesy. Amusingly, there's some banter toward the end of the first show about Sigel not having competed in ten years or somesuch.

2) Lighting! During Karen Corr's time at the table, you see the shadow of the camera platform moving around *right across the table as she's shooting*. Terrible. Get some better lighting on the TV tables in those cases, to eliminate those shadows - shadows that well could have distracted Corr at the time. Maybe make the "water lady" hold a big lamp up. :P

3) The whole "let's show the very last game" bit - after the first match, it's OBVIOUS that when they get around to showing a full game, the player who's on the hill (and it's always 7-X at that point) is going to win it and the match. Next go around, for a full game, show the BEST game of the match - not the last one, which is a complete spoiler for the match as a whole.

I found it amusing that they did the whole "this show sponsored by Natural Cures!" bit, but couldn't have a Natural Cures commercial, like you would normally see in a show when there's a "sponsored by" bit just before the commercial break. :)

Oh yeah, and McCready's "I needed two beers" comment, complete with the footage of him hoisting a bottle of brewski. :)

Edit: 4) The banner ad right here on AZB for the KOTH show, premiering "tonight" (i.e. a day after). Whoever put that ad banner together and did the media buy for it wasn't thinking too far ahead. :P
