IPT on now on OLN

I liked it.
Sure Sigel talked too much.
But, since this was the round-robin coverage, they had to show several matches.
Much better than ESPN's coverage.
Stop whining.

I have to say that after watching it I was pretty impressed, and I almost always expect the worst. I too would have like to see more actual play, but I also see the benefits of getting to see shots and play from a various number of competitors instead of just two. I thought it was well put together and polished. Easily it's the best production of televised pool I have ever seen.

It was nice to see coverage of more than one match, but how many actual full games were shown?

I'm still trying to figure out how much i enjoyed watching it:confused: . If it wasn't just highlights, i know i would have watched it on mute:eek: .

Just finished the show. Overall I thought the coverage was good, although I think I'd like to see more actual footage as opposed to as much time compression.
I agree. I don't see any point in capsulizing the matches. Watching a "highlights" version of each match is too shallow and uninteresting. It doesn't allow the viewer to get the pacing or the drama of the match. I'd prefer a verbal report (or show the final couple of shots), then show a feature contest. Hopefully they'll air a full match in ensuing broadcasts. Supposedly the finale in the 6th week is 2 hours long, so perhaps we'll see some "real time" pool.

I disagree....I thought the format was good.....I'd rather watch highlights of many matches than one long match with every inning of every game shown....it would definitely get boring....I was really surprised at all the missed shots by those pros......

Overall, I thought the coverage was good, the interviews with the players a nice touch and I believe they are building this toward a big finale.
I felt the commentary was the weak thing here, they were condescending and assumed the audience would not be knowledgeable. Would a football commentator ever explain what a touch down was? Come on!
I did think the lack of people in the stands looked bad...but may be they will fill up.
I hoping more of that behind the scenes coverage that we saw in the trailer...I think that, along with the interviews gives the action a kind of "Reality" TV touch. Like watching the Amazing Race...
I think the build up of Siegel as the "King" is a little hard for all of us to take...and they also seem to address that in the preview. IMO, he comes off arrogant and boorish but I know he was key in making this happen so for that I give him credit.
Favorite Moment, Johnny's admission that underestimated Korr and that he's never do that again.

Tight pockets + slow cloth + Big $$$= misses

p.s.
Everyone misses, if you ever get the chance to see the Accustate of Efren playing Earl for a Million, you will see Efren miss ball in hand.

The coverage was just okay.

There wasn't enough reality, drama, and background stuff to make it a true reality show...and there wasn't enough pool to make it a legit pool broadcast. It straddled somewhere in the middle, which is not the place to be.

They didn't do a good job describing the tournament format. Sure, they gave a very brief description at the beginning of the show, but that's not enough for the viewers to remember the details of the round robin format throughout the broadcast. The subsequent matches that they showed just seemed so inconsequential. You see Hohmann lose a match to Manalo. So is Hohmann eliminated from the competition? Does Manalo advance to the next round? You have no clue.

The worst thing is they don't state the names of all 43 players that participated in the tournament. They should have given a quick lineup at the beginning of the show of who is in what group...and especially who are the hall of fame members that will be competing in the later rounds. There's absolutely no anticipation.

However, I do like Sigel in the booth. So much better than LJJ giving the commentary.

It was all just okay.

Finally, A channel I can get. 2nd showing at 10 PM E.

As many said before me, OLN is on Direct TV satallite, for me, channel 608. I'm so glad that IPL is finally on a channel that is national and that I can get. :) It not only is on at 7 PM Eastern, it is being REBROADCAST at 10 PM Eastern on the same OLN channel. I missed the 7 PM broadcast due to shooting 9 ball in an APA league. I will definately b in front of the tube for the 10 PM showing, 50 minutes from now.

Well I think if you're trying to get the masses watching then posting highlights and misses is the best route. If you want die hard pool fans (they'll watch no matter what anyways) then there should be more full racks. I think it was a great production. Maybe they should allow sharking and beer drinking though.

Johnny Archer vs Karen Corr is next! I just got through watching Shawn Putnam vs Keith McReady and I've got to say that I just love Keith's honesty. He was interviewed afterwards saying that he wished he'd had a couple of beers while he was playing. I loved it!

OLN is the Outdoor Life Network. It's out of Canada.

I don't know of many systems that don't have it (but that doesn't cover too many systems). I'm on Comcast.

I let it pass the first time Fred, but when you said this again    I'm in Canada and no IPT on OLN

Dave, who really hopes he didn't just miss it  :o

It Was a Good Show

Putnam v McCready was the best pool segment of the show. Both guys unfiltered..... it was interesting to watch. I also think McCready got to those beers before the post match interview......He's really entertaining to watch on and off the table.

The thing that stood out for me was all of the trash talking of the women players. Archer v Korr (Johnny's comments post match) and all of Segal's comments were trashing the ladies. Mike even said he didn't like playing against them.
Ironically the women won the matches highlighted on the show.

I do think we'll see more pool action as the field narrows. There'll be less matches to cover so hopefully we'll see more of them.

Actually, I have a feeling that showing two matches where women beat prominent male players was completely intentional. I think they wanted some provacative matches for their TV debut, and women competing against men and doing well does that (i.e. Danica Patrick). Also, I think they were trying to make a point that their tour is completely open and there is good reason for it because the gals can play.

Right on Jeff....

Mike Sigel
1953 - Present
Inducted 1989
MIKE SIGEL, at 35, became the youngest male elected to the BCA Hall of Fame. Born in Rochester, N.Y. Sigel began playing pool at 13, and turned professional when he was 20. A natural right-hander who shoots left-handed, Sigel won his first major tournament, the U.S. Open 9-Ball Championship, in 1975. His career blossomed quickly, and Sigel was perhaps the game's dominant player in the 1980s. He amassed 38 major 14.1 and 9-ball championships in that decade. Sigel has won three World 14.1 crowns (1979, 1981 and 1985) and one World 9-Ball title (1985) as well as numerous national titles.
