I was wondering why KT thought it necessary to hold several tournaments with huge payouts all in one year. I think it would have been sufficient for the IPT to have had one, or at the most two, tournaments in a year. I mean, the opportunity to win $500,000 in prize money is already enough for most pool players to practice hard and participate to the fullest.
Had he gone this route it would have lent more credibility to the tournament, kinda like the WPC or the US Open. Plus, it would have been easier to manage and more marketable. By going the route of the PGA tour with several competitions in a year, he put a huge strain on his finances and organization. Correct me if i'm wrong, but pro basketball, football, hockey, and baseball do not have several tournaments in a year. They just have one championship in a given year and it gives whoever is the winner more time to bask in the glory. I think the reason that golf, tennis and F1 can have several competitions in a year and just declare a grand champion based on individual performance at the end of the year is because they are already well-entrenched organizations, with established rules, procedures, and policies. And, individual competitions are handled by different people, with just a stamp of approval from the parent organization.
After Efren won the recent IPT, did anyone hear of Thorsten? He was the toast of the town for all of three months, and then he was old news. I think they could've milked each championship dry for a whole year and drummed up interest for next year's tournament.
It was a case of too much, too soon, and a lot of people got drunk with the prospect of making so much money that all rational thought was thrown out the window. Hopefully, Stanley Ho and his organization has better experience and logistics to carry over the IPT to success.
