Iraqi Vacation

Just thought I'd post to let you guys know that I will be leaving next week for a vacation to Iraq. I haven't been posting on the forum much lately but I am always lurking and catching up with all the pool news... and bickering unfortunately.

I was planning on making it the BCA for the second year in a row but I will have to wait till next year. I have been wanting to go to Iraq since the war started and I am finally getting my chance. I've been all over the desert before but never Iraq. It is sure to be an experience that I will always remember.

Take care everyone and quit bickering!

Hey! There is one guy in here who knows everything maybe you could take him with you and drop him off somewhere in IRaq where he can explain to terrorists how they are running there operations wrong and he can demand a list of what they do with their money. LOL

DeadPoked...thank you. Let us know about the pool action over there. Purdy and others just sent some cues that way. And again...thank you.

Good Luck!!!! Been there/done that...

Are you Army/Air Force/Marines?

I wish you the best of luck and come back safe!!! The best advice I cn give is to stay away from the convoy's.

Jim

wayne I would take him but I doubt he would be able to teach anyone anything!

jhendri2 I am in same branch as you. I am in the intelligence/communications career field and hope to stay away from convoy's as best as I can.

Thanks for the kind words everyone. I am now going to go start my weekend early and drink enough alcohol to last me my long dry deployment.

Deadpoked, thank you and thanks to all who serve our country with courage, dignity and commitment.

Our nephew just returned from his year "vacation"..... The sacrifices of all branches of the military are deeply appreciated, for without the bravery of troops like you we would not have the freedom that so many take for granted. Thank you, Deadpoked -- stay safe.

Best advice I can give is...CHAPSTICK!!! The sand and heat SUCK!! I'm on a team that goes every 15 months and my time comes again in Sep. Take extra shower stuff and undergarments, t-shirts, socks etc. You'll be glad you did. Not sure what base you'll be at bust most have BX's now. Gym's are great. You'll definately lose weight.

Interesting story...

We wanted some sausage for breakfast, the "local nationals" didn't quite understand what sausage was, so we got hot dogs and eggs. I'm sure you won't have to worry about that now.

Like I say, don't volunteer for any convoys, no matter how interesting they make sound. Not worth it!

Good Luck and God Bless!!! I worry about every troop that goes over. I am medical by the way.

I was trying to think of some kind of advice and think this is good. I remember somewhere about 5 months into my tour in Vietnam I got to a point that I wasn't as aware of the danger of where I was. I think I was less careful between the 5th and 10th month. Then when I started to get short my awareness came back.
Stay alert the entire tour.

God Bless

DeadPoked,

Thank You for your devoted service. Be safe and drop in when you can.

Your message lets us know that there are lots of things we can use our energy on other than ourselves.

Jerry

p.s. To everyone in the forum and throughout the world who has served, (or will serve) allowing us the freedoms that we enjoy ----- THANK YOU!!!

When did it change to BX (Base Exchange I presume)? In the dark ages when I was in the Air Force it was PX (Post Exchange).

Good luck Deadpoked.

I've been in for a little over 15 years and it's been a BX (Base Exchange) ever since I've been in. The Army and Marines have PX's. You know how the Air Force is, we have to be different. I guess it's because we're on an Air Force BASE and the greens are on an Army POST.

Who knows?!?!

Where were you stationed when you were in?

Jim

Godspeed DeadPoked and return safely.

Steve(catscradle),
You're really showing your age buddy :-)
I was in the AF from 89-95 and it was BX.
Were you in when it was still the Army Air Corps?

Matt,

When was your tropp there? I took care of all the AF battle casualties when I was deployed. I definately wouldn't want to be an LRS troop right now. I feel for you guys.

He wasn't my troop. Just a troop in LRS. It was.....over 6 month and to be honest, I don't remember the exact time he was over there/returned. I just know when his same team goes back, they will only have had 10 months at home. It's tough on the drivers. They are the only career field within LRS doing the convoy stuff as far as I know. It's a tough business for sure. What can you really say? It sucks, but someone has to do it. Period. No sane person would WANT to do it, but we have to honor our commitments. Thanks for taking care of everyone. You medical guys do a great job.

Take Care

DeadPoked, you take care of yourself buddy. The Purdy's will keep you in their prayers. If there is anything you need while you are over there, post and I will see what can be done. Thanks, Purdman
