Is Efren Reyes Good For Pool??????

Is this true? i read tihs in another forum

"Okay, we all know that when Efren first played in the US he assumed the name of Cesar Morales. What we didn't know is that he was playing left-handed exclusively!!!! Most of his opponents could not beat him left-handed so they would ask for some sort of handicapp. Efren would then say sure, I'll shoot right-handed."

LOL

Perception is Everything

I must disagree. Pool is enjoyed by thousands of players who don't find it necessary to gamble. Those who really understand the game enjoy it for the pure pleasure of playing. Gambling is a small part of it. I can go into my local pool room on any given night. 16 9 foot tables, and maybe 3 or 4 of them have money matches going on...the rest are playing for fun.

The fact that is has never been really done on a large scale has nothing to do with gambling. I think it's more that nobody wants to put the effort into building it up.
Steve

True, but perception is a different thing. It's really interesting when a minor thing defines the whole activity.

Since I'm on the perception train of thought right now, what places where you normally see a pool table? What do they serve in there? You can't really promote something to a mass number of students something that might find themselves in trouble.

Good question. Right now, I usually go to a pool room with 16 9 foot tables, a kitchen and a bar. Yes, they serve alcohol. So does nearly every restaurant in town. They also serve beer at the bowling alley, and parents don't have a problem taking their kids there! It doesn't mean kids are buying, just that it is offered as an option for adults.

This goes right back to my original point. Building a foundation. Why aren't there more boy's/girl's clubs, YMCA's, Community Centers, etc with pool tables? Because nobody has promoted it as an option for kids.

Here in town, UNCC has a full pool room in the student center...about a dozen 9 foot tables. I contacted the university about setting up classes to offer for the students as part of the phys-ed program. I was told it did not fit in their plans. I am still trying to figure out why a university would dedicate that much space and money to provide pool tables to the students, but not be interested in using them in an educational capacity!!

I will also be contacting the local community college and see if they are interested in offering pool classes in their adult education program. Until we can get pool accepted as a mainstream activity, it won't be growing.

So what can we do to help the sport grow? Well, if we have a few million to throw around, we can start another pro tour. Or we can contact the local youth organizations, high schools, community colleges, etc and let them know we would like to see pool being offered. Or we can sit back and complain on the forums about the sad state of pool. I prefer to take an active roll and try to get a few blocks put into that foundation.

Steve

As I mentioned before, pool has a very "unfashionable" reputation because it's a very blue-collar activity, and many universities want to be in the "COOL crowd", so they offer golf in phy-ed. At least where I attended college. They even offer polo as if students at state universities can afford to buy and maintain a horse just to be "COOL".

i still think the best way is to have some matinee idol type win a major pool tournament. that could drum up some interest for pool and maybe get kids excited.

that highlight reel of magical efren reyes shots might also do some good. someone already did a short one in youtube and it was nice, considering it was only done on microsoft movie maker with limited clips taken from youtube. wouldn't it be great if someone posted a professionally done reel with great highlights from previous tournaments? i think accustats has a video of the sort.....

I agree , i remember when i saw Color of Money and Tom Cruise playing the "cool pool player" i got interested playign pool , i thought pool is cool..... but got interested again when World Pool Championship was televised worlwide in 1999 w/ its "state of the art" venue not bar room environ...lol and commentators played cool in making the game interesting by putting nicknames like the terminator , iceman etc.! but some players fit "the cool player" like Mika "iceman" Immonen and the terminator man :D

and btw i hate players wearing bowtie and vest when playing pool ...not cool :D

I used to volunteer for YMCA for kids playing ping-pong. The facility has 3 pool tables, but there is no money to maintain it. The worst thing that happened was the director of the place found out that high schoolers were playing money games, so the tables were removed.

the question here is a deep and important one. is efren reyes good for pool?
the answer that i give is NO!

you see, i see it this way, there is the skill of the person and then there is the person of the person. let me go further~~

if tiger woods was white and rich and played the exact same way he plays, would golf be as huge as it is now? NO! why not? because, the public wanted to see a young black kid stick it to the rich white man! that's what made mothers and daughters and people who otherwise would have not tuned into view golf, view golf. you see, no one cared that tiger was so talented, but they cared that he was beating the white rich men, this was appealing to us little poor folk, to the common man struggling, it was refreshing to see, that a young black kid, could kick the big bad white rich men at their own game, this is the essence of why golf is so freakin huge, not talent, but the person of who and what tiger woods stands for in the world of discrimination and justice.

i raise another question, if the beatles wer'e bald fat 60 year old men without english accents, and picked their nose on television would the world have freaked out so much? NO! we would have said, hey great music, but then the world would have moved on.
BUT~~~~~~ the beatles wer'e cute, hairy, great accents, young youthful with tons of humor, making them the most sought after entertainment act in history, yes their music was genius, but we bought the entire package.

this leads me back to my original question~~~~ is efren reyes good for pool?

the answer is clearly NO!
his persoanlity does not come through, and there is nothing the general public cares about, so what if he is the greeatest pool player ever, it means nothing, there is no "appeal" to the general public. thus, no one cares. he is in deed , the greatest all around player that ever lived, and in the phillippeens, he is GOD,however, in america, he is an unknown pool player who will remain so.

pool needs a women champion, or some young perhaps handicappped kid, something that mom's and people of all walks of life can sink their teeth into, and ask, "is so and so playing in this tournament?" the general public doesn't care if efren reyes is playing in the next IPT event, however the general public does care if tiger woods is playing in the next golf tournament, ask yourself WHY? i told you my opinion why.

where does this leave us? i don't know. it would be nice to fix a tournament so austin murphy wins it ,so overnight, pool becomes something the general publics wants to view, but we just can't fix tournaments, until then austin will have to win it on his own skill, and once done, the world will tune into pool to watch "the kid" beat the grown ups, soon maybe one day we will hear this, "is austin murphy in the next tournament dad?"

With enough silicone & growth hormone, Efren could be made to pass as a resurrection of Anna Nicole Smith and he could become a foster parent for Britney's baby, while playing Elvis' old ballads.

Or he could remain the humble, crime free, peasant philanthrophist, family man & people's hero that he is.

I think the popularity of pool with the general public is the result of the marketing efforts (or lack of) by the major pool organizations. Tiger Woods is a quiet, very common, ordinary looking person with an uncommon talent, much like Reyes. Good playing brought him to the attention of golfers. Good marketing brought him to the attention of everyone else. Look what marketing did for women's pool. Are they better players than the men? I think not. Are they more popular with the public than the men? Without a doubt. Look what marketing did for Texas Hold-Em - a bunch of fat old white guys playing cards. Now if marketing can make the world love them, they can do it for pool too.

let me say it again, efren reyes is the greatest pool player that ever walked the face of the earth, and i am the second worst IPT player, after ryan keller,ok there i said it! now, onto the subject at hand, will moms and family members tune into see efren reyes win, or austin murphy? hmmmmm, don't think too hard!! LMAO!!!!!!!

My parents loved to see Efren reyes play on TV because Efren is one of the greatest player who play the game in the name of pool....i said ONE of the greatest because there is Varner, Earl, Archer, Soquet, Chao, Busta, Alex, Wu, Duel, SVB and others that still play the game of pool. for you my friend i respect your opinion about Reyes but i think you brought to raise an eyebrows for some others...so goodluck in your future playing pool :)

Now if Earl Strickland, pools bad boy, started winning everything and still showing out, now that would be good for pool.

hmmm yea that might just be the dumbest thing i have ever heard anyone say and if ur not just kidding about what u said than maybe u need to go get some help because the public doesnt not like tiger because of his skin color we like him because of all the tournaments he has won and he prolly is the golfer that ever lived.....dumbass

I know one thing. He'll be missed when he's gone from the pool scene. Who else has pleased so many people all accross the world as he has?

I think it's a toss up between Pamela Anderson and Eskimo Nell.
