Is it pretentious to play with a certain cue?

yes or no?

Example, some guy in the APA is showing off this monster cue of his that he's paid thousands of dollars for but can't shoot a lick. I have seen people talk about this fella and it's nothing nice.

versus

The house pro that has a nice simple shooter cue that runs racks.

I guess there's shooters and collectors. Nothing wrong with both but as I'm phasing out of pool...I wondered what got into me when I bought some of my cues.

hey i resemble that remark. except for the showing off remark.

by your logic all us bangers should just stick with the 19.95 sportcraft from wal mart. hell for that matter all the bangers that cant shoot a lick should just use house cues. just let the serious players like yourself buy a 2 piece cue.

yea thats an idea. no need to buy a 2 piece cue, no need for a case since you cant play good enuff to use a 2 piece cue, no need to buy chalk, tips , shapers and all that other crap.

let all the good players buy all that crap. the bangers can put all the money they would use to buy cues etc to buy beer and get obnoxious, put quarters in that loud ass jukebox, and just annoy the hell outa all the good shooters while we are slopping balls in with a house stick, beating them and being called a sandbagger.

wish you would have posted this years ago. i could have saved a lot of money instead of giving it to phillipi, mike erwin,mc daniel, mc dermott, predator, viking , meucci, who else.... oh yeah, instroke, moori, kamui, and probably a few more given some time to think about it.

your jacket reminds me of a player i faced at my singles regionals this year. i left my custom at home because i was going to a town where i had never been and knew no one that was playing. i was not taking a chance on it getting stolen or damaged. it would be financially hard to replace it.

i took my unknown make 40.00 pawn shop find that i used to break with and my 8 year old viking and a 35.00 vinyl case. in the semi finals i face this guy with a nice instroke case with about 50 or 60 patches on 2 big hog rings attached to the towel ring on his case. he pulls out his predator bk2 and a pat deviney custom. i beat him 4-0. my bad, i forgot to be intimidated by all his subtle intimidation tools:rolleyes:

Congratulations!!! That shows that you have developed some solid strength in the mental parts of your game skills. That is something that all players should be working on even for the most basic beginners. But the reality is that most players make the mental training aspects of their pool game the last thing that they consider in developing their skills. Keep working on your game and perhaps someday we can meet in Vegas. :)

there was this guy back at pegs pocket in miami in the 1980s that really couldnt play a lick but went out and bought a $1200 richard black. He use to show it off and I remember we use to think he was pretentious for buying such an expensive cue when he couldnt make a ball. Then a few months later he left the cue in his trunk (in florida summer heat) and when he remembered it a few days later it looked like WC Fields cue.

Lucky guy

I paid $1500 for my richard black in the 90's and around my parts nobody knows who the hell that is, nor would anyone know anything other than predator and cuetec for the most part :(

In my 40 + years of playing pool I'm more concerned with the condition of my tip than the cost of my cue, without a perfectly shaped tip to apply the english required to make and control the balls your just banging around in my opinion regardless of the cue you may use.

David Harcrow

Right on. First the tip then the shaft. After that its all how the cue feels to you. Johnnyt

As others say, it's about the attitude. I don't care if a player who can't make two balls plays with a high end cue. But if that player is swaggering around the pool room like his ownership of that cue puts him in the bigs, then, yes, he's pretentious.

It's almost as pretentious as the guys on this forum that have a "Signature Line" that reads something like this?

Playing cue: McDermott, {and others}
Jump cue: Predator
Break cue: Mezz
Case: Justice
Chalk: Kamui
Tools: "Who gives a rats ass".

Buying fancy stuff doesn't make you a better player.

Nothing wrong being a collector and not being able to shoot. If someone has an issue with it, it is from pure jealousy.

I like to see what other people are using. Not too pretentious when there is a Joss or McD in the signature.

It's What You Can Afford?

Here's the bottomline....owning a high end cue is a treat.....anyone disgree?

Good....so as treats go....there's usually a big big price difference in the price range of treats.....boats, cars, guns, custom fitted golf clubs, cameras, etc. and yes,.....pool cues.

During our lifetimes, our ability to acquire these treats will admittedly change from time to time but the truth be told....we all view these treats based upon where we are at in lives and what we can afford.

Now let's be realistic....there's a vast difference between a $1500 collectible cue and a $5000 collectible cue......case in point, compare a early Scruggs 4 point steel joint cue with a ivory joint Joel Hercek or Dennis Searing cue........I mean there are high end cues and then there are indeed higher end cues.....right?

I'm not saying, nor implying, that one high end cue plays better or even different....and indeed, if it did play different, who's to say one would prefer or even like the difference.....right?

Sp what's my point?..............Thanks for getting me back on track...........
as long as the person you see in the pool hall doesn't behave like they're elite or some other condascending behavior toward pool playing or pool cues, and for that matter, the person just isn't a complete butthole.....let that person enjoy their treat.

The fact that I can't afford a treat like that is no different from going to my car after playing pool and seeing that same person get into a new Aston Martin......it's just the way the life's hand played out and so they get to have enjoy better, different treats than I do.

For me to be envious is understandable but to criticize the other person for being flashy, showy, a snob, or anything like that simply based upon the treats they get to enjoy....well, that would just be jealousy on my part....and anyone's else as well.

So admire the possessions of others when it deserves admiration, hope to step up with the cue you own at some later point in time and get back to playing pool with the cue you own. I mean when you go to the prom, it doesn't matter how pretty the other girls there are....you're still going home with the gal you took to the prom.......... and sometimes we tend to overlook what we have.........I mean, it's better than staying home on prom night.......right? NUF SED!

yes it can be pretentious to play with certain type of cue. Some people like to show of their nice cue and have everybody look at it to make him feel special. Then there are people that want to show off and pick a crappy cue to show they can win no mater what. This is not all cases of course but most of the time the people I see doing these thing really aren't that good or serious pool players.

My uncle has a funny story about this type of thing. He walked in to a pool hall with a nice cue. Everyone wanted to play him and see his nice cue, he was beating just about all of them and he was feeling pretty good about himself feeling like a real "winner." Then the next thing he knew some kid in his early 20s walked in the pool hall. He told me "this kid pulled a random bar cue off the rack just checked to see if it was strait and beat the crap out of off me and then I took my nice cue, put it in my case and walked out the door."

Yeah, those pretentious McDermott owners.

Freddie <~~~ Pretentious is as Pretentious Does... Period

I believe a hundred years ago, someone made a suggestion to put their shooting cue and playing time in their signature... I think. That's why a lot of people started doing it. But, my memory is faulty and my attention span is... IS THAT A CHICKEN OVER THERE???

Thing is this setup may not be pretentious enough for some on here !
