Is it repairable? Is it worth it?

Hello all,

I bought this cue and was told it was straight but it is not. (Internet purchase so I could not check it before I bought it)

What I want to know is whether it is fixable and whether it is going to cost too much to fix compared to the value.

Are you 100 percent sure its warped. Take the shaft and butt apart and roll each individually and see if each piece is warped. Looks to me like maybe a bent pin, bad install on a pin, or a dirty joint. Something looks wonky with the joint though. If you notice it doesn't look to me like it is warped it looks like it is bent at the joint, but that could be just the video and my perspective. just a thought...
 
I am no cue maker by any means, but having seen several hundreds if not thousands of cues up close...

it looks as if the shaft has a pretty severe facing issue.

My best guess would be that if you unscrewed the cue, just enough to have about a 1/4" gap between the shaft and the joint... it would roll much better
 
You really didn't provide enough information to say for sure where the problem lies. However, if the butt-cap and the tip both stay on the table as the joint is moving up and that severely the bend is most likely at the A joint. The previous owner probably had the joint faced already in order to stop the tip from lifting when rolled.
 
i also thought pin issue but if u look closely it looks like shaft is not fitting flush and one half of joint collar is sanded half way ......
 
In the video it looks as if the butt collar is sticking out about a 16th in diameter from the shaft collar. Problem may be pin/insert not centered in butt/shaft. Rolling each
piece or checking run out on lathe might give you a better idea if shaft or butt is the problem.
 
It looks like the pin may be bent and or the shaft is warped. In the video the shaft is not aligned with the butt and from the looks of it the pin may be a big part of that. If you roll them separately and the butt is straight then the shaft/pin is more than likely the issue.
 
You will never know what is wrong with it until you roll the butt and shaft separately. If they roll straight it is most likely a facing problem. As to whether it is worth fixing, we need to know which part is warped to decide how to advise you. You should do the rolling apart and decide where the problem is and then post the results.
Also post pictures of the whole cue so we can decide if the cue's value exceeds the repair cost.

Hello all. ...

I rolled each separately and the handle has the wobble. The shaft rolls nice and true. It is not just the pin or facing. You can visually see the wood leave the table near the pin and a couple inches back.

Does this mean it will just be an art piece for the wall? I was hoping it would be usable art...
 
That wobble in the butt will not hurt the way the cues plays very much.
We do need pictures of the whole cue to know if it is worth fixing. A new handle under the wrap will probably take most of the butt wobble out. That is most likely going to cost a good bit north of a $100 for the repair job. We can't give quotes on here, but you could ask for PMs on fixing it prices. I am too busy to do it myself.

Seems to me the shaft has a slight taper roll which really isn't that big of a deal. As cumin said. The warp in the butt won't effect much either. Honestly how does it play. do you find it hard to play with? Then its wall art or repair job. If you can play rather easy with it, then its playable art.

I had a guy come in and his shaft was warped like a banana. I mean i couldn't even put it on the lathe for fear of it either snapping or hurting me or something it was bad. But he was ok with it. I asked him how he could use it and he said "thats how i get english, If i want left i turn the warp to the left, if i want right i turn it to the right and if i want draw i just turn it to the bottom." I still haven't figured out if he was joking or not, but Like i said i have seen way worse than the stick you own being played with. Its all about YOUR comfort level. Simple as that...

We don't know, what you showed is not enough to let us see well enough to positively ID the problem.

No one will know the real problem with out looking at it in person and mostly it will need to be chucked up in a lathe to see exactly how far off it really is.

The ss joint collar looks like it is not flush with the shaft collar.
and there is some kind of damage to the ss joint collar.

Its possible but this only a guess that the glue failed on the stainless steel joint collar and when it was glued back on the collar wasn't placed back into its original place or spot.
and the black ring below the ss joint collar looks uneven to me too.

Take the cue to a cue repairman see what he say's
