Is Pool a Sport?

What's the best tip for applying left hand english? lol

Everyone knows the OP is trolling, right? BieberLover is his screen name after all.

Also, I remember the OP making a stupid comment about my mother not that long ago for no apparent reason. Purebred pos if u ask me... But there's never consequences posting anonymously.

Apologies for prolonging this. I'm in the "doesn't matter" column but by your logic, video games are a sport.

They require eye-hand coordination, granted, it's not the same level as hitting a 100mph baseball, but not all folks posses this skill, but it's needed in most sports, even video games.

Sincerely,

:-)

Yes, video gaming is a sport. They give college scholarships now for it as well. There are MILLION dollar purses for winners of national events. It takes incredible skills, eye-hand coordination, combined with smarts to do it. If the best guy in the world set next to you it is not going to make you shoot straighter in a video game. It's a needed skill set.

So, yep, a sport indeed. Heck, there is a guy making MILLIONS with a website that reviews the latest games, he defeats them, and then gives you the tips on doing it. Does not mean you will be able to, but some of his tricks help (according to my teenage son). It cost nothing for his tips, he makes his money of the advertisers because he gets a zillion hits.

Now, I just gotta think of a way that Magic Chalk can be marketed to video gamers, then I get to retire early :)

Beebs, trolling? Surely not!

If you Google the question you'll find that Wiki has about as good an answer as anybody.
The games of pool (nine-ball, One Pocket, etc.) are each a part of the Cue Sports.

Football, by-the-way is a game, as is golf, basketball, and baseball.

Sailing, boxing, rollerskating, and tournament drinking are sports.

Since I've been here this topic has come up three times.

I'm surprised Beiber brought this up. It's more like something JohnnyT would do.

If push comes to shove we can always ask PJ.

In the end the consensus will be about 50/50.

I said "Your mom goes to college. "

Which was a joke/reference to the movie Napolean Dynamite.

I meant no offense, but do apologize if you were offended.

This thread was meant more to showcase the comedic genius that is George Carlin.

All billiards games are competitions governed by predefined sets of rules in which the outcome is generally determined by the skill/ability of a competitor (or team thereof) to achieve specific physical actions. Billiards, in its different formats, has been played widely around the world for a very lengthy period of time, and enjoys widespread interest, competition, fans, and has structured recognition in terms of a hierarchy of performance.

Football, baseball, horse racing, weight lifting, and archery all share these traits, though the degree balanced to each may vary, and are all games - and also sports.

Poker, chess, and other games which have many of these aspects in common with the others above are missing in one critical area - they difference in performance as a result of the physical ability of the competitors. It doesn't matter how accurately or forcefully one takes a bishop with a knight, for example, so these would fall strictly under a classification of games (unless one wanted to argue a subclass of 'mental games').

Two reasonable people....this makes me feel better about being an AZer.
:bow-down:

Pool requires excellent hand eye coordination, phyical stamina and a mental grasp of phyics. A little heart doesn't hurt either !

It's a sport !

I think it's in a bit of a grey area between sport and game, but definitely closer to the Game side of things.

Any activity where Steve Mizerak can compete with Niels Feijen or Shane Van Boening with is not a sport IMO.

And I'm sorry but pool does not require physical stamina or endurance or anything like that. One would burn as many calories walking leisurely for 5 hours as one would burn playing 5 hours of 9-ball. The fact that pool require mental acuity, geometry, etc. etc. etc. doesn't make it a sport anymore than it makes Tetris a sport.

Ya got me....

What ever you call it, it's the only game I know of where a 64th of an inch can screw ya big time,

A violin and a fiddle are the same instrument....
...what makes it one or the other is the manner in which it is played.

So....I think when Earl plays pool, it's a sport.
...when Efren plays pool, it's a game.

But either player sometimes crosses over

I've seen professional football players out of breath after running 25 yards. A lineman somehow picks up a fumble, and off he goes. He almost needs help getting off the field ;)

It's just like any other sport where you need thousands of hours of physical practice to develop the proper muscle memory and hand-eye coordination.

Games like chess, etc. only require knowledge and have no real physical component, so you can get better by reading and playing online.

So video games are also a sport.
