There's a bar north of me that has a sharking tournament every once in a while, I went to one and had a blast. Almost anything goes besides physical contact. Even the bartenders were getting into it, walking straight through the table area, etc.
My strategy was to not shark at all until a super crucial moment. It helped win me the match for the point, my opponent was up on me in a race to 4 and on a super easy 9 ball that was right around the rack area. I got up and grabbed the rack right as he was shooting, and he dogged it! I went on to win the set.
That is a very minor "move" if anything. More frustration than trying to distract someone on purpose. I was at the International Open for a day, they have refs, if it was a punishable offence they would have said something, or the opponent would have. Don't be like an APA player and jump at every minor thing to win a game. "HEY HEY, he shot a 1 inch shot but DID NOT MARK THE POCKET, I WIN! I WIN!"

Capito threw a visible tantrum at Liushan open when Zhang Yi came back to beat him, stropping around the table, furiously wiping his cue, refusing to help take balls out of the pockets, face like thunder. All things you can do without getting reprimanded by the referee.
Yeah, it's more than being disrespectful: under the WPA rules if you practice on another table during a match it's a 6.17 Unsportsmanlike Conduct foul, which is at least Ball in Hand and could be upgraded to loss of rack or loss of set or ejection from the competition depending on the referee's discretion. You should have hailed the TD or Referee.

I have wondered that too! I wonder if it’s just a habit from when they weren’t using a glove, or perhaps just a routine to help clear the mind, or whether there really is something on the shaft they want to remove.

this is something that definitely can change. i play where a lot of young talent has come up. nip it in the bud early + be a good example and they will learn sportsmanship.
draw it to the extreme, where noone is told off ever, on anything. people would be sitting on the tables, beer bottle on rail, and they would be cheating in the game in every imaginable way
