Is the SBX for pool players or just a money making extravaganza?

This was my first trip to this event, although many friends have participated in the SBX for years. I must say after having been to events like the US Open and Derby City, this was by far the worst event myself and a group of friends who went ever experienced.

The organization was atrocious. After having already paid and pre-registered you stand in line on Wednesday evening for hours in a confusing set of isles supposedly designed to make things easy, which did nothing more than complicate the matter and frustrate players.

Want to watch a Pro Player play? It'll cost you $10 per session $20 to have a VIP seat to watch a match with no commentating and no background music, so you can't event speak a word or you're potentially disrupting a player. Not to mention your marching in on loud steel football style bleachers which are oh so quiet. How about score-keeping? I think they finally put some some score counters on the Pro tables on the 3rd day. PPV, was the worst I ever seen, quality that looked 15 years old, and was down several times, not worth a penny. I live in NY, go to Turning Stone Casino and watch all the Pro players play for 4 days, sit right next to them, get autographs, pictures, with more comfortable seating than most arenas. Oh and they offer this all online for streaming as well. What will this cost you, not a nickel! The website, albeit was created and is maintained by Allen's son, isn't very mobile friendly (and who doesn't view these sites on their phones or tablets) and they did a pretty decent job posting amateur score brackets but nothing for pro matches for days.

Food, outrageous, lines that never seemed to end, Order a small sandwich, a cup a soup and a bottle of water will cost you near $20. Parking, was a joke but I guess that can be expected with such a large event. However once you park a mile away be prepared that you can't just enter any entrance to the Expo, you MUST enter the main A doorway to get your hand stamped (this is a requirement ever new day with a new stamp color) and than you can roam freely throughout the EXPO.

I did not play well, I almost couldn't wait for my match to be over so I could just take my cues back to my room and just walk around like a mindless zombie for the next 3 days looking at the endless stuff for sale. So I decided to purchase a JB Case from a vendor, only to find myself harassed and accused of stealing that very case when I strolled into the JB Case booth just 10 minutes later. The matter was cleared up and I was apologized to, but nevertheless the entire experience has left me with an awful taste in my mouth and I doubt if I or any of my friends will ever be back as the SBX.

In retrospect, I've been to trade shows before. That's what this was, a trade show that had some pool playing events at it. It by far caters to the vendors and those who attend to spend money at those vendors, period. I as a pool player for over 30 years never felt so out of place a a tournament in my life.

I applaud Allen Hopkins and all the hard work he and his organization put into this enormous event. There was a moment I didn't see Allen running around doing something the entire time; but in my opinion as a player who really loves this game, its history and want to see nothing more than it survive and prosper I can only say that this is a money making extravaganza that commercializes and demeans the sport, not promotes and prolongs it!

Who blamed you for stealing a case?

I think it's a great tournament. It's no Derby but still, hard to cater to everyone with so many people attending.

You should bankroll this kind of show yourself! Maybe you could improve on it. As far as the money making extravaganza most vendors LOSE serious money being there. I did it for reals for 9 years--I sell way more staying home.

Having attended over fifteen of Allen's extravaganzas, my opinion is it's the best of all the events I attend all year long. Food too expensive? Try buying a hot dog at the VNEA Nationals. Or the BCAPL Nationals. I've grown to call the people at the entryways the "door nazis". Try bringing in outside food or beverage to one of those events! The tables were open from the first minute of play to the last. If you add all the entry money (less registration fee), Allen returns MORE than the total to the players. Yes, the Expo was a little light this year. Some long time vendors were absent.

Sorry to hear about your problem with JB. John, Karen and Matthew have always treated me well.

There were some less than great things there but all in all, this is still the best. Period!!!

Both.. Allen makes money which after the work of putting an event together this size he should and it's for pool players. I don't think people think about all the costs that go into running this event. That building isn't cheap. The carpet for under the pool tables people wanted isn't cheap. All the fine people running this tournament have to get paid. The insurance etc etc. it all costs money. I hope Allen made a boat load of money and continues to.. some years are better then other but it's still 4 days of pool heaven I hope continues.

On the losing end

I didnt go this year because of other commitments but the only rule I know of in Pool thats constant is....if it doesn't make money, it doesn't continue.

Stuff happens and you have to learn to roll with it.There aren't many events like that out there. What a nightmare to organize. An all year job.We don't have anything
of this sort in South, so we would love to have it in any form.

You tell the truth. Hope Allen makes a fortune on this event. Just think if he could find a location in Las Vegas and ran a second event in November. I'm drooling. Well, I'm really old. Old enough to be a "Stupid Senior" . The drool might just be old age :thud: .

Allen is running an event strictly for super seniors this summer at the beginning of June. It will be held at the Valley Forge Casino. We have the flyers on the counter of our poolroom. Call Allen to get the info. His number is on the Super Billiards web site.

Coleen, one of Allen's tournament staff, gave me several flyers before I left Sunday night. Three day event seems long to me. Not counting it out. I'll have just returned from three weeks playing in the ACS and VNEA Nationals. Might be too much pool  . Love Allen's events and try to support his efforts whether 8 ball, 9 ball or 10 ball. Holding it at the Casino is a great idea. Probably in the basement where the Expo used to be. Thanks.

Every year we get threads criticizing Allen. Some begrudge him the money he makes on this event. He holds a great event and it is a Mecca for amatuers and pros alike. He doesn't stop for a second when he is there and his loyal staff works very hard. You can criticize him with your feet and not attend if it is such a bad event.

Meanwhile the event sold out faster than ever. I have heard he would have expanded the field but couldn't get the tables. Could this be a good indicator that pool is actually on the upswing?

Converting things to file is not my forte. Call Allen or call Classic Billiards. Jimmy has the flyers on his counter. 610-935-1118. They open at noon today.

I wasn't there Wednesday. I arrived Thursday morning, but I imagine trying to organize hundreds of pool players isnt the easiest thing to do.

Want to watch a Pro Player play for free ...
In the years I have been going to the Expo, I believe it was only twice that the pro event was free to watch. Watching pro-caliber pool in person is something you should have to pay for. Some of the early matches were held on the outside tables so you could have watched those for free.

Food, outrageous...
They are at the mercy of the venue. Considering this place is the next best thing to the old place, and in the same area, you really dont have much of a choice. I'm sure finding a venue for this is probably hard as shit.

I did not play well, I almost couldn't wait for my match to be over so I could just take my cues back to my room and just walk around like a mindless zombie for the next 3 days looking at the endless stuff for sale. Sucks you didnt play well. I went out in the first round one year. That blows, I agree. Once you are out of the tournament though you can always go get on the action tables. Cheap racks of 9 ball and 10 ball over and over again all weekend. Lots of fun and one of the best things in the world for your game. Shitty about the case, but there is a lot of theft at these places I'm sure.

In retrospect, I've been to trade shows before. That's what this was, a trade show that had some pool playing events at it. Well they try to make it for both. He runs a ton of tournaments.

Plus Minis and a second chance tournament.

I can't really see your point of view here. The cuemakers do well. There is a ton of things for the players to do should you want to do them. The dealers do well.

To me, it's an awesome 4 days and a real boost to your game while you are there provided you are shooting a lot. I will admit that walking around the place for 4 days after you lost sucks, especially when you arent in the market for anything, so you gotta keep yourself busy. Go get in some action. Play in the minis at night. Make friends and meet up with them every year.

I have a great group of friends that I meet up with. Some post here, most post elsewhere. We all shoot around and get dinner and stuff. Made plans to meet up with HangThe9 and we had a good time talking and shooting in the pit. Even lost 10 bucks to him :)

Allen does the best he can do and I'm really grateful for that.

Tried to attach a scanned copy. AZ says the file is too big. I can mail a copy to you today. Will that do? The dates are the evening of June 8th through June 11th at the Valley Forge Casino complex.

JB himself. Like I said he apologized, but it was quite an ordeal.

This is the same time and location as Montco/Bucks APA Tri-Cup/Cities. Always a fun time.

Few years ago Charles Barkley paid for the bar in the casino to be open for about 30 minutes. Don't remember much after that.

So if you need a room at the casino get it quick, it will be sold out.
