Is there a weight between the 8 & 9

I beat My Buddy even with no trouble but I can't beat Him giving up the 8. Is there a weight between the two?

I'm probably wrong. Given the choice between the two, I'd rather have the 8. Personal preference, I guess. More chances to combo or slop something in.

Call 8. This takes away the possibility of him snapping the 8 on the break for a win, and is also good for you when you snap it in. Or have you tried giving him games on the wire in a race? That might work for you.

1 game on the wire race to 6..... that sounds like a good idea.

For me, it depends on the style of the player. If Im playing someone that likes to roll the money balls alot, I would prefer to give them the last two (or call 8). If they try and runout, then I wouldnt mind giving them the 8. JMO.

I like game spots rather than ball spots. It seems just as good as a spot, but I have seen people choke up on the last few in the rack a lot. Play nice for 5 balls, then end up with a bank on the 9. It ends up giving you more chances to win games.

You could give him the call 8 only with no combos. I consider this the least amount of weight in 9 ball.

Really one of you just needs to get better if you're that close. How can he consistently miss the 9 when it's the only ball left on the table though?

I thought that the last two was "more weight"

the last 2 just means the 9ball and the ball before the 9, whatever it is. I would consider it less weight than the 8, since you can combo or luck the 8 but you cant ever combo the last ball b4 the 9.

OK next question..... what is more weight in a race to 6
#1- the called eight
#2- the last two
#3- 1 game on the wire

It depends on what his strengths are. If he is really good at combos, the called 8 would probably be the most weight. If he is more of a run out player, the last 2 would probably be the most weight.

One more thing

If you are the one giving up the weight, you TELL him what you will give, do not let him tell you. If he beats you, his pool reputation goes up. If you beat him, yours stays the same, but goes down if he beats you.

I would add that if he's really good at lock-up safes, the called 8 would be a lot of weight. If you're going to end up giving him ball-in-hand once a rack, then it's a huge advantage for him to have two different money balls he can line up a combo/carom on with that ball-in-hand. His safes will lead to immediate wins much much more often.

It looks like the game on the wire is gonna work out nice. We played 7 sets last night and I won 4 to 3. Thanks for the tips guys

The eight "safe"

A game I seldom see anymore is the 8 safe. That means if he makes the eight at any time he cant lose, but he must still make the 9 in order to win. If you make the 9 you break even. As in the 8 and 9, you must make both balls in order to win.

That's an interesting handicap! Thanks Freddy
