I know a 9 feet table is the normal way to go but are there games (8-ball, 9-ball, one pocket, straight 14.1,...) that play better on a smaller table? Or is it that 9 ft is the best size for all pool games?

Here we go... There are a lot of strong opinions on this - and more than enough people will to give theirs here ;)

In my humble opinion, 8 ball on a seven foot diamond table with pro cut pockets is a tougher game than 8 ball on a big table. Other than that the nine footers are the best for all other games

For the pro's, I would say:

14.1- 10ft
10-Ball- 10ft
9-Ball- 9ft
8-Ball- Chinese 9ft

For amateurs, probably a standard 9ft for everything!

Preferred

I guess it would depend on what you meany by "preferred". To me, I prefer 9 ball on smaller tables and 8 ball on larger tables. My thought is that the larger table reduces clusters when playing with 15 balls vs 9. On smaller tables 9 balls may cluster a bit more but the shots and position is shorter. Just the amount of balls on the table for me. I also dont really play 14.1, 1 pocket, etc, very often.

I agree with this 100%

There is nothing wrong with playing anything and everything on a 9 foot table. Whether 8 ball would be "better" on a bar table with different pockets I neither know nor care.

i never play on anything but 9 foot tables

but i usually play only one pocket

i thought that whatever interest in 10 foot table there was
at one time,it had all dried up

i don't know anyone who has a 10 foot table in his home,

i had a 10 foot centennial but i sold it to Mark Gregory

imagine one of his 10 footer, but you need a good size room

after playing on it and getting used to it,it might make a 9 footer
look easy
