is there really a need for four cues?

I had four cues total, and I ended up using all of them at least once when I went out playing.

1 Playing Cue
1 Breaking Cue
1 'Juice' Cue
1 Spare Cue/Bridge Cue (moose head bridge)

Unfortunately my normal playing cue broke when it fell out of my case off the tailgate of my buddies truck, so now I just have my Breaking cue, my old juice cue with the new tip on it and my bridge cue.

It's all a matter of personal preference, not a lack of fundamentals (well, not completely anyway) if you like having just two cues one for breaking and one for playing or whatever then that is your choice.

But I can see what you mean by it looking strange

There is a limit of having 3 cues at the table. I believe that is the rule at Nationals, and I would check to see if that rule didn't hold true for league play also.

But it could be:
Playing cue
Backup playing cue
Break cue
Jump cue

I always took 2 playing cues with me when I went to Vegas, just in case.
 
I hate to bring him into the discussion because it usually causes the thread to spiral out of control but Earl had 4 cues at his chair at the 2004 US Open. They all looked the same (black with white points), but he had one for breaking, one for jumping, one for shooting, and one for...I dunno.

sorry, i just think four cues....all ready to go... is a little much and doesnt make you any better of a player and makes you look pretty stupid if you ask me.
 
Maybe he lets his team members use them. Not everyone owns a cue and he may just bring them for others to use instead of playing off the wall.

I have seen this before. I saw a guy walking in a few weeks ago with two cases and I said, Oh did you buy a new cue, and he said, No it's just a spare in case anyone want's to shoot with it.:)

I have also seen guys let girls use a cue they own as a way of flirting or Breaking the Ice.:D

I think ur right. And another note, u were right as to when I recently bought a new cue case, I should have opted for the larger one. But, again, I have not found the need as of YET. I work in levels, and buy equipment as I need them. Almost got to where I need to be in my breaking ability and now would like to either work on jumping or masse shot. Which would have me require a cue for each, but like I said still working on my breaking ability and getting very close to where I want to be.

The same way that sex toys creep into your sex life, is pretty much the same for equipment in Pool!!! LMAO ... did I say that? ...:D

I do not like a real stiff hitting cue for one hole.
Also, I like between 19 & 19.5 oz.
For 8 ball & 9 ball, I like about a 20 oz. cue and
I seem to prefer the stiffer hit. Thus, 2 different
cues.
 
For most players nowadays, it is quite needed. for me however, it's not. I just use a customized cue with a nice tip for breaking, and 1 playing cue (predator SP). the reason behind this is I often lose the fluidity in my stroke whenever I change cues frequently. It means that I got familiar with my playing cue on how to play it with certain shots. changing cues would only disrupt my normal stroking habit even if I've only used that other cue once.

The question is "Why do you care if someone has one cue or ten cues with him at the pool hall"?

I wasn't aware we needed permission or your approval to carry a certain number of cues. There are quite a few players I know including myself that carry anywhere from three to four cues. I have some favorite cues and I like to take them out for a drive so to speak when I go to the pool hall and league night.

Also I was unaware that the number of cues you "have ready" reflected on a players quality of play. Just my thoughts on your comments that I think are a little obnoxious.

I could say you "look pretty stupid if you ask me" for making such comments....but then again I'm not that kind of guy that would say something like that.

People do things EVERYDAY that make them look stupid.... not one of them call me up to ask if its ok.

Now if they did ask me, I could let them know how stupid they look and they might save themselves from looking like idiots.

for example:
If a guy said to me "Im thinking of joining a pool forum, and I think my name should be hirun526"

I would say, "No, thats stupid.... unless you really have a high run of 526.... which is pretty unlikely."

Then the guy would be like...."Thanks! I didnt even think about how stupid that would be. Good thing I asked for your permission!"

Actually your example and what we are actually talking about are two separate things. Weather someone has two, three, four or however many cues isn't quite so clear.

I have seen quite a few good players have three and four cues when they play, does this make them look stupid? No, to me it makes them look prepared for a break or problem with one of their cues or maybe they have specific cues for specific shots.

Like has been pointed out, most players have a cue for breaking and a cue for playing, then a jump cue depending on the player. Anyway, what do you care, if you think they look stupid, let them look stupid and just beat them.

Also, as a quick edit, I was watching coverage of the Mosconi cup and I saw a player get frustrated and broke the shaft of his playing cue and had to switch to using the shaft of his playing cue, now that may be a pretty rare case but still, if it happens it happens and I would rather have a spare cue to switch too that I am also used to playing with than risk having to use my breaking cue and possibly lose a rack that could cost me the total match.

There are too many stupid people that actually cause me some form of inconvenience to worry about the people that merely look stupid. LOL. Besides, no matter what you do, someone's going to think you look stupid.

Either way, I'm not going to be carrying around more than two butts anytime in the foreseeable future, but to each, his own. If they want to limit the number of cues, that's fine with me too, as long as they don't set the limit to 1 cue. :) I believe the BCAPL rules limit you to 3 cues.

I work in tech. support so I tend to see the stupid come out in people so yeah why worry about those that just look stupid.

I dunno about the BCAPL rules, but I think the APA limits to 3 too (could be wrong though, have to look through the rules when I get home)

oh ... and about the 4 cue thing...it kinda reminds me on one of my other hobbies... bike riding... not hogs..but real old fashion pedal bike..

every so often you see the guy in the bright as$ yellow jersey or say, complete team gear..down to the socks..sitting on a 4K full carbon Scott
..and you say wow that dude looks fast..then he pushes off and cant even get into his clips until 200 yds later:p

If somebody rolls into a pool hall with 4 cues lines up..well he should have the speed ..if not, its just a waste and the guy ends up looking like a jack ass.... JMO
