Is this an 8x16 foot table?

Before packing it in for the evening I thought I would post this picture of a table. This table obviously originated before they standardized the size.

If you can afford a table and a room like that you can pay people to win for you. That'd be an interesting 3C table.

That's a 7' X 14' table. It was called an "ocean" table in the old days. When I was just a kid.

I wonder if you can still find one? thatd be awesome to play on. Do u know the pocket sizes on those jay and what games theyd play?

I want one with 4" pockets.... and 2" inch balls...

give me 6 months and I'll take on anyone on a bar box....

 .

Light, Hell, check out what you can see of the ceiling.

snooker table

if i remember right when butch owned the billiard palace upstairs in bellflower they had a snooker table where they played golf and i was told it was called an ocean table 7 by 14 ? i never played with the big boys, but had a chance to look diagonal from corner pocket to corner pocket, snooker balls, tight rounded pockets, and shooting a 16 foot shot. it was scary. chuck

I am curious, the 7x14, was that the playing area or the dimensions including the cabinet? When I was young I remember playing an old timer that often said that the 6x12s were much smaller than tables he played on when he was my age. I always thought he was feeding me a line.

looks just like a 12ft snooker table. You cant really tell the size from the angle of the photo though...]

better have a darn good aim for those cross table shots!

I agree about the angle. But if you look at the width of the table having three legs, I think the gap between them appears to be wider than 3 feet. There again camera angles do funny things. Years ago when snooker was on TV up here in Canada, I had someone argue that it was not being played on 12 footers. They were bases their opinion on some of the camera angles.

I don't know, but if you assume the height of the table is between 30 and 36" (they got high back then), then I can't see it being bigger than 7 x 14. And I can convince myself that it's just a 6 x 12.

But, I can be convinced that Prego tastes better than Ragu.

Fred <~~~ doesn't use Prego or Ragu

The cue case laying on the table looks like it would touch rail to rail. I don't think cues are 7'.

Jason, good point, but I believe that cues and maces back in the 1700 and 1800's came in whatever lengths the table necessitated. I will take the post card out tomorrow and have a look at it with a magnifier.

I had a look at the postcard under a magnifying glass. I don?t think the case or whatever it is on the table, housed a cue. The end that is closest to the end rail is about twice the thickness as the end near the side pocket. Perhaps it was made for a mace. Also the centre of the table has markings for a Pin Billiard game. A tidbit, the bench to the right of the table was made to match the table. The markings on the card says ? 2.ARENJUEZ CASA DEL LABRADOR. SALON DE BILLAR
Obviously this makes it clear, as to the size of the table.;)

Again, take a good look at the height of the table. The table height can't be over 36". Judge it from that. Like I said, I could be easily convinced that it's a 6 x 12. Certainly not an 8 x 16, which was your original question.

It might even be an odd size like 6 x 14. I've seen a few tables that weren't anything close to 2 x 1 (Length to width).

Fred, I tend to agree with you. The 8x16 was just thrown out there to get peoples attention.
