Is this SCHON worth restoring?????

Hi all,

I picked up my Gold Crown I table today and got a bunch of old worthless K-Mart cues with it. In the bundle of junk was this Schon. I don't know anything about Schon's, so the question of the day is.....Is this one worth restoring. It is a pretty plain and simple cue, so probably not worth much??

If I can have the cue restored and and be close to even on it, I will restore it. Otherwise, into the trash!!!

What era might it be from??

You have a 1980's series cue called the R1. Restore it for your own personal use, but it may not be much of a money maker to sell. I think book is around $500 - $600 in perfect condition.
 
If it's straight, it would be well worth getting that butt piece replaced. I don't see any damage in the pic other than that butt piece. Whoever does the work can clean up the shaft. There are some cue builders on this site who could do it.
 
Thanks for the info... the butt and shaft are straight, unbelievable considering the rough life it had lead.

I just got it today, so I haven't decided what to do with it yet.

Any ideas on cost for Schon to replace the butt cap???

I'd recommend having the cue fixed by Evan Clarke at Schon. They are the only ones who can supply the buttcap with the "Schon" imprint and you want the cue to be as original as possible. They probably charge somewhere around $50.

The ferrule looks like the original micarta - a good thing to have. It will be worth maybe $400 street value when done, so don't go too crazy on the fixing up expenses.

Just click on the "repair" box on the left. I would suggest e-mailing him first, info@schoncues.com, asking for the repair costs. Make a list of what you want done. Evan doesn't usually prefer to be called about repairs but e-mail is fine. You might want the cue polished and cleaned, the shaft cleaned, the wrap cleaned, etc etc.

He does exceptional work and he won't touch a cue someone else has worked on. Your cue looks original to me.

These old Schons are excellent players. The stitch ring Schons with micarta ferrules - just the shafts alone can go for $175 - $200 if they are straight and thick. The old micarta is no longer available (it had asbestos). They also don't make the black phenolic linen shaft collars - they are now a solid plastic - so the old shafts are wanted by collectors.

Schon repair

I'd definately have that cue restored if it's straight. Schon's from that era are collectors items and i'd only have Schon cues do the work. You want it to be as original as possible and Schon cues is the only place to get the right butt cap put on the cue.
 
I will probably just have it cleaned up, replace the butt cap and hang on to it. I could buy a stick of gum with the offers I have gotten !! :D

I agree with the majority and would only have only Schon work on the cue...however, since the cue cost you nothing, I would have Schon do a total restore and refinish at a cost of about $170 if it were mine. jmo
 
thats an easy fix and since its straight it has to be fixed you'll be in good shape fixing it, you wont lose a penny. if it wasnt straight then there would be something to talk about, fix it!!!
 
Thank you all for the info and offers. I am currently researching the cost to have the Schon repaired and refinished. If I decide to sell it, I wil reply to the 15 offers I received before listing it in the for sale section.

I just opened this thread, and it warmed my heart to see the AZ Billiards forum in action. Anyone who doubts that this is indeed the greatestt pool resource on the Internet needs only to read this thread! Rep to all involved!
 
UPDATE:

I will reply to all those who made an offer on this Schon. I am going to have it repaired and keep it in my small, but growing collection.
