i was wondering if anyone knew if there was any open spots in any of the tournaments down there?
and if there isnt is the action good and is there other stuff to do down there?
 
Depends on your interpretation of fun. Some people would say that the SBE represents everything that is wrong with pool and for others its the must go to event of the year. There's all night action, which means that there are tons of forfeitures from people oversleeping and missing their tournament matches. You can count on some bare knuckle brawling (which I'm sure you could then get action on) and you'll want to keep your cue and your wallet close by because there are plenty of sticky fingers walking around.

On the positive side though (and everyone knows I'm all about finding silver linings) there are tons of great deals to be had, pros everywhere and finding action there is about as easy as walking through a Tijuana whorehouse with a c-note taped to your forehead. If there's a bet you want to make, chances are, the guy standing next to you will cover it.
 
Wow! I've never heard anyone say that the SBE 'represents everything wrong with pool'...NEVER. It is professionally produced, well represented on every front: cuemakers, casemakers, retailers, cue repair, instructors, trick shot artists, pro tournament players, gamblers, beautiful women...and of course hundreds and hundreds of hungry, competitive amateur pool players!

I know most people on the forum love the SBE, but I am personally not one of them. It is events like the SBE that propagate the skeevy rep that pool carries. All you have to do is go down to the basement and you'll find every pool stereotype all in one giant smokey room. Hustling, gambling, fighting, smoke so thick it stains your clothes, drugs, etc.

Anyone who's actually serious about wanting pool to be recognized as a sport, put in the Olympics or covered by the mainstream media should see the long term damage that the SBE does to the sport and the industry. As long as events like the SBE continue to be high profile events for pool, the industry will never attract any major sponsors outside the industry simply because most businesses don't want to be associated with what goes on at events like the SBE.

Just my $0.02 though (which I'm very aware is in the minority).
 
guess you havnt been there lately. NO SMOKING POLICY IN EFFECT...GREAT EVENT..NOT 2 MANY AROUND ANYMORE...

Given the choice of Derby City or SBE, I would suggest DCC is better. The matches are pro, and gambling is more diverse IMO. As noted here, when I was there a few years ago, there was one table "the pit" with action. IMO it was a bangers delight, but it wasnt pool.

The huge amature event is okay, but who the hell wants to watch "Plumber Joe" in an event? I would rather see the top pros battling it out. The pro event that was there when I went was an 8 ball event for the men that about 20 people showed up for. Immediately afterward, the women played and the stand were full.....:rolleyes:

The big plus was the cuemakers were there in force, much better than at the DCC.

I go for the pro event and the cue makers. I heard the event was 10 ball this year. Is that true? I think it is a blast and am glad that smoking is not allowed.

I'd suggest you make the trek at least once and draw your own conclusion, don't listen to all the BS you'll hear, 17th year running and the place is packed every year, Allen Hopkins Productions must be doing something right!

It's an awesome event and is totally smoke free.

Admission was discounted with APA membership bring your card!
I think it was $12 or $10 per day I checked their site it's10 each day
I bought a 4 day pass last year I will let you know how much! checked out and is $35 with any league membership 3 day fri-sat-sun. only 20 with league card that is the one I will get! Great value thank you Allen for all you do!
Vender's are there in mass ready to deal or talk pool!
Pros are accessible and walking around ,they are also at vender's booths signing items,taking photos ,answering your questions, talking with you, or even playing you!
Pros are playing and extra admission last year was $10 with apa membership for each session! same this year!!!
These matches are like taking a lesson from the best!
sat. night is the Pro-am a free spectator event on the bar boxes ,great competition and another chance to learn how to do it!
There are also some vendor giveaways(apa etc.)!
The pit is fun to watch!
I saw some big time gambling games there and railbird action is encouraged !
Last year Matt Clatterback took down Lil Jon!
I talked to both after ,real nice guys and not afraid to lose!
SVB,cory,etc. etc. playing on the box!
Laughing and joking!
There was also some serious money being played for!
another one was Luc & Sparky going at it for $500 a game 10 ball!
Sparky got the best of it that time!
Still lots of laughing and good natured banter going on!

Lighten up and enjoy life they are not hurting anybody!

Just one man's opinion, but I prefer Hopkin's superbilliards expo to any other event. I like it more than the Derby, US Open or world 14.1.

It has the best selection of cues, great gambling/hustling action and pro events. The Derby is similar, but the expo has everything going on at once. There is nothing like it.

My one pool trip each year and I'll be there in about 26 hours! I simply can't wait. It's about my 10th year going and I would not miss it for anything. I will be playing in Open Amateur 9-Ball, Seniors 9-Ball, TAP team event, doing a little gambling in The Pit, watching the Pros play 10-Ball and as a bonus it is the 1st weekend of March Madness NCAA Hoops! I mean come on....it just don't get no better than this for pool fanatics. I'm bursting at the seams dude:thumbup:
 
I've never heard a negative thing said about the Super Billiards Expo. I went a couple years ago and had a blast. It's one of three events I urge any pool player to go to, the DCC and BCA being the other two.

it gets no better ,smoke where , no smoking . fighting have yet to see a punch thrown . mini tournoments run till early am more action then a worm stuck with a hot tooth pic a 20,000 added pro event one of the best junior events in the country more venders than you can shake a stick at its pool at its finest.whats not to like ,its a pool palace! not a yacht club..

I love it, I get to catch up with old friends, see all these players that remind me that I am not any good at pool (that's ok though), watch the craziness of the pit and just wander around taking it all in. Last year I got to show John Schmidt how to stand when playing snooker (he didn't need much help). Always the pool highlight of the year for me. Jimmy Lawless if you are reading I will be there Saturday night, we have to go and get some beers!!
