It takes an athlete...

I just got my *ss handed to me at my weekly one hole league. I lost horribly but it did not affect me like it should, like it would an athlete. I simply said, "Darn." If I was an athelete I would have said, "I am going to come practice everyday, not sleep, not eat, just practice." But, unfortunately, I am not like that. I played sports when I was younger but it was never my life. Now, my sister is an athlete. She played nearly every sport her schools offered and exelled at every one. She would stop at nothing to improve. Mostly because she had the desire and drive to be the best in each sport. I realized you really need to have a desire for improvement to be even decent at this game. Do not get me wrong, I love to play, and I love to win, but I do not practice in the place of things I usually do (Like sleep, or eat). I think the problem is that my desires lie in bodybuilding and education. I guess you could say I am an athlete for eduction. Bodybuilding is a 24 hr. "hobby". It is a lot more than 2 hours in the gym everyday. Trust me. And getting a decent education is niether cheap nor easy. Just needed to get my thoughts out.

Nice post. You have to be married to pool to be able to excel like you want. Education can get in the way, as I know from experience, but it is well worth it. You will always have pool in your life, and can devote more time later when your schooling is done.

A lot of pool is muscle memory. Your muscles are being used to lift and work out. A total contrast to how they work playing pool. When you get the time to put as much time on the table, as you do in the gym, then you'll see the difference.

Stick to the education. It's a lot more important than pool. When your old, like me, and have a hard time lifting a cup of coffee, then you can play some pool. I'm still pretty good at the age of 59.

To play billiards well is a sign of an ill spent youth... As you know that is in your signature. I was in my local pool hall about 2 years ago, which was a few months after I started playing, and the bartender had a HUGE falling out with the owner. He said, "I can not believe I wasted 12 years of my life here." It stopped me in my tracks. I did not want to be the 35 year old man who's every memory was in a place he came to distain. I did not go back there for about 2 weeks. It really got me thinking. A few months later I came to a crossroads with pool and weightlifting. It should have been one or the other. I decided to give both a try and that is almost impossible. I have to practice all day for pool but I can not be in the pool hall more than 2 hours because I eat every 2.5 hours. Also, a lot of action takes place late at night when I am getting my beauty sleep. Like tommcgonagle
said, they are conflicting lifestlyes. I just can not give 100% to school, 100% to bodybuilding, and 100% to pool.

You have to find a balance... if you want it ..it is there.

I work a 50-60 hour week job as an exec manager..
I play pool 2-3 times a week... 3-4 hours a shot
I coach a football team.. 2 nights a week and weekend games
I play golf at least once a week
I hit the gym/road 1-2 hours each day

I have a wife, two kids (and a bun in the oven)...

There is a lot more time in 24 hours than most people think.

I put out a HIGH level on just about every activity above.. the golf needs some work.. but I am fresh back into that game after taking afew years off.

The reason that I can spread it like I do is b/c I am a beast at my job.. and a monster on the football field... it just comes naturally.. ther isnt a lot of work needed...pool is better than most but not great... a BIG plus is my that my wife supports me in all of my endeavors.

If I were to focus on one of the above things.. I would be unstoppable... but I chose to be a jack of all .. rather than a king of one...

May your third child be a masculine child. Congrats. My problem is that I need to keep a ridiculous GPA to try and get my grad school tuition paid. I also work ~36 hours a week. During the summer I have more time to shoot but I still have to lift, eat, and work. I am not trying to b*tch beause I know nearly everyone else has it harder than me. I just need to find a better balance. I think with that new balance, pool is the area that will suffer.

A superior competitor/athlete also adapts quickly and fearlessly to adverse events during the game.

As Mike Tyson said, "everyone has a plan...until they get punched in the face."

See I am the opposite. I got my rear end handed to me at Shooters in Olathe, which was my very first tourny I went to. I had a broke right hand and I didn't care, I played because I was signed up by Eric. lol. Not only did I not accept defeat, I got motivated because the guy pretty mopped me. I was missing easy shots on a 7ft valley. I started practicing harder and etc and I have gained a ball to almost two balls on my highest runs. I am almost close to running racks of 8 and 9 ball a few times, where before I couldn't run even if there was a t-rex xhasing me. lol

As for bodybuilding. I can feel you there. I eat healthy 5 times a day, on a strict diet, and workout two hours every day of the week except the weekend with a personal trainer. I got on the scale today and I have dropped 20lbs in a month!

There was no way I am doing one thing over the other, so I made time to fit both in my days. I wake up early, workout in the morning, have my entire day to do whatever and have a few hours to shoot pool. Dedication my friend. If you are willing, there is nothing that would stop you from doing what you want. Hope all is going well with your bodybuilding and soon for your game on the table. Nothing beats a macho guy dacing around a table gracefully lol

School (education) and work (money and food) comes before pool (A hobby for most, and a profession for a few). To balance it would be tough. Right now, all my time is gym and pool hall. That's it. When school comes, pool will drop to a lower priority. I am working to get into grad school, so I am trying to boost my GPA and get a good GMAT score, so pool has to wait for a while. Once I get a good job after graduation, I wouldn't have to worry about much, but how to shoot like a pro :)

Happy shooting! :)

When you take the GMAT PLEASE tell me how it is. I have the GMAT review guide and I took the diagnostic test and it said I was retarded. I am thinking about winging it my first time but 250 is outrageous for a practically paperless test. The score I got on the ACT practice was about 10 points lower than what I actually got so I am not too worried. In pool I have been practicing more in the last few months than usually but only on an 8 foot. I just do it to keep me in stroke and it really helps. Only 20-25 minutes a day. What are you studying? What school? What grad school are you thinking about? Thanks for your response. I am glad to see I am not the only pool playing, gymrat, student on here.

Haha, yea, I am trying to loose 60+lbs for my cousin's wedding, so I am working hard my man! I am studying Accounting, and for my GMAT, I still have 2 semesters left before I have to take it. I am aiming for a 700 range on the GMAT and try for one of the Ivy Leagues, hopfully, or else just my state University's grad program. I am at my state University right now, UMKC.

Yea, those practice test are outrageously priced, it works and is beneficial. Money well spent. You might take the GMAT before me, if you do, let me know how it is as well. What are you studying? Take a look at the MBA website, and they have a few tips on there as well. I actually wanted to take one of those Kaplan courses for GMAT, but god sake, it is super super expensive.

For pool, right now, I practice on a 9ft table 2hrs+ a day, sometimes I will get in 6hrs a day! lol

Good luck on the test and good luck with the game.

don't break your other hand if you don't get to 700

Playing pool good is an ill spent youth? How you figure?

Pool keeps my @ss out of trouble if you ask me. I refine my skills rather then getting involved with the sh*t most people my age are in.

It has taught me smooth precise movements. It has taught me how to deal with pressure situations in everyday life. I've met some pretty cool people through playing pool as well.

I guess i'm supposed to be out getting drunk every night, and getting laid like everyone else..... no thanks, we've seen where that has gotten this once great country.

What's wrong with that? :D

I agree mostly, but I like getting laid

that applies to pool too. if i was hittin balls and someone punched me in the face it might change the way i looked at the situation

In theory, there's nothing wrong with it.

Just like there is nothing wrong with drinking or owning guns or etc.

It's how you as a person go about doing it that makes it wrong or right.

..and unfortunately, hardly anyone knows the word moderation.

I'll clarify that statement as I seen I left a few words out lol..

Getting laid every night in the out of context way.

As in helping people cheat, AIDS, diseases, fights, and just the drama in general that that sort of lifestyle brings with it.

FTR.. moderation is not a word to be associated with getting laid....
