As it sits, both shafts are cracked/warpedand the butt could shoot around corners. :eek:
 
I had an old Palmer (I bought it second hand in the 70's) refinished not too long ago. I looks great now, but the only problem is that, since the butt cap was chipped to hell, it had to be replaced and now there's nothing to identify the cue as a Palmer. BTW, there were no inlays, just a solid BE Maple Butt.

Of course I can rebuild it. Most of the warp is in the handle. There is a little in the forearm but not enough to cause any problems. The thick rings in the butt sleeve are supposed to be white pearl and I'll need to replace the GNS collar.

This is the stuff I love to do. I always prefer the challenge of rebuilding to building.

This is an early Palmer. I would estimate 1966 -1967. The forearm was made in Palmer's shop and is almost a copy of the forearm Burton Spain was making at the time, but with the handle attached with a "V" splice. The forearm will be a real beauty when it's re-done.

Concerning the unusual butt sleeve configuration on this cue, Palmer did use "marblette" for a very short while, but cutting it and sanding stunk up the shop so bad, they quit using it. I don't know if all of the the butt sleeve components are original to this cue.

This cue is going to clean up beautifully - wait and see. Those veneers and inlays are going to pop right out at you.

Here's a pic of the butt cap disassembled. All of the parts seem to be original. Notice the weight pin that was hidden inside of the sleeved and was capped with wood. I made a new handle piece today and will have pics of it next week.

I was going to ask if it was one of Burton's blanks when I saw the butterfly splice below the points. Did Palmer ever use any of his blanks?

Here is the Palmer with the old handle removed and a new handle made, with the ebony splice. I will also rejoin the two pieces using a threaded ebony dowel (already installed) to maintain the feel and balance, or at least as much as I can. I also had to core out a few inches into the forearm because the original ebony was cracking and I didn't want it to continue.

They sure did, as did Frank Paradise and Balabushka

Burt was the first(?) to build and sell front blanks and full length butts.

Said he only did it because the Hoppe/Titlist had declined so much
in quality.
