Ivorine lll vs lV

What would you guys think is the better choice for ferrule material on a carom cue.

I had one ferrule of 3 crack after about a year that was made of Ivorine lll
I had it replace with lV and it cracked in about 3 months. I was told that lV is the better choice but in this case it wasn't. The original lll material I feel came from bad stock. Very porous.

At any rate what are your thoughts? Maybe something else?

A softer one should last longer. IV is hard and comes from a flat sheet.
Not from a rolled material.
Fiber ferrule should do it.

I wouldn't immediately jump ship on the Ivorine IV. The problem could be that particular ferrule was flawed, or the installation was flawed. (Not questioning the cuemaker's skills.) I just wonder if the tenon was seated properly inside of the ferrule?

Is this a capped ferrule?
What size is the ferrule...1/2" or longer?

I would try a "capped" ferrule. They are stronger & resist cracking, no matter what material you use...JER

I agree. Ivorine 4 is the strongest ferrule material ever made. You have to cut it with carbide...it'll flatten hacksaw teeth in seconds. I use a LOT of this stuff and have never had one single issue. If yours cracked....I honestly question rather it was truly Ivorine 4.;)
If you'd like...send it to me. I'll replace it correctly with Ivorine 4 and give you a lifetime warranty!:)

If you're making a short (3/8" - 7/16") carom ferrule, you almost HAVE to make it a sleeve type ferrule rather than capped. Otherwise you lose too much glue surface. And if you're making a thin wall sleeve type ferrule, it HAS to be made from mandrel wound tubing - NOT flat sheet - if you expect any resistance to cracking. And that limits you to either Ivorine3 or Aegis2 tubing, both of which I've used in exactly that configuration with ZERO failures. (Now I feel like I am really tempting fate by saying "ZERO failures". That's like saying "Gee, I haven't had a flat tire in years." or "There's never a cop on this road." or "I never miss this shot." etc., etc.)

Thanks for the info. from everone It clears up a lot questions.

Varney Cues - Appreciate the offer but have already sent the cue and shafts back to the (it's) maker. Any future issues I'll send it to you if you can deal with a 3/8-11 wood pin in the shaft. Sound easy enough but had one of those broken by a very qualified cue maker while changing a tip.

Things happen.
