Ivory Boxed Cues

I think that one of my all time favorite designs is the Floating Ivory Boxes in Ebony design. I believe that Szamboti started this - but I've seen some beautiful ones in the past by Josswest, Ginacue, etc.

There is a guy in my area who has one of the two that Josswest made WAY BACK WHEN. He actually had Bob Frey make a duplicate, and it is extraordinary - thus I was inspired for one or two of my own (but while inspired by those....they will be totally original in execution). I'll post pics when they are done.

Anyhow - if anyone has any photos of other ivory boxed cues, I would love to see them just to add to my photo collection.

That Szamboti on ebay right now is just sensational...unfortunately this Sergeant doesn't have the kind of bankroll to buy something like that..LOL.

i love all cues, but for some reason box cues just dont get me going, the szam on ebay right now is a very important cue-i hope it stays in america, but i just dont get excited about box cues and i should, i do like the old ones that are hand done more than a pantograph cue.

No, couldn't be true, cou. He only collects those skull cues that he copied the idea from Evan Clarke and Schon, right ?? I know, I've seen a Gilbert he had him do like that.....

Hi Matt. I love box cues too, and have them by Stroud, Ginacue, Schick, Mottey and others. The first box cue was made by Ernie Gutierrez in 1969 for Ed Kelly, a great pool player for decades. He was known nationally for the cue, and the cue is The One that caused others to develop their own box cues. This Ginacue is discussed in the Ginacue section of the latest Blue Book.

I have collected box cues for 35 years, and have had them on display multiple times at Bill Stroud`s ICCS shows. Last November I had eight of Stroud`s ebony/ivory box cues on display, along with others by Ginacue, Schick, etc.

Yep, that's where all the box style cues started....with Ernie G. He is such an influential figure in cuemaking. He developed many of the styles of cues we all have come to know.

i would pay strong $$$ for ed kellys cue, we were friends years ago. and i like that cue, but man i just cant get into that szam, i'm still trying to like it but it just isnt working for me.

Thanks for posting pictures of of Ginacue for me. By the way, the second box cue pictures you posted are of my very first box cue. I ordered that one new in 1973 from Bill Stroud (only one like it), and sold it in 1975. I tried to buy it back 2 weeks later and was told it had been left on top of a car when getting in the car, and was gone for good. 31 years later, in March, 2006 I saw it on AZ by someone wanting to sell it. I ended up getting it back last spring. The family of the person who owned the cue lived in the Ohio city where the cue was lost. It is the same one. I have pictures that match the birdseye! This is the cue with the most significant emotional attachment that I have in my collection. Bill Stroud calls it the Prodigal Son, and it will now be with me for the duration.

Because I was told it had been lost and gone forever, I believe it is why I started my Quixote-like quest for box cues, because the one I wanted, I could not have..... but then I got it back. Kind of like being able to re-purchase your first car, etc.

This former Mottey is missed very much. I bought this new from Paul, brokered through the late, great John Wright. I saw it for sale on here a while back, if the current owner wants to part with it, I am all ears.

No ivory in it but a unique box cue all the same...the only Meucci 97-30 made. Made and signed by Bob, comes with a signed certificate also. As strange as it sounds from a man who collects Szambotis, Showmans and Searings, I spent 7 years tracking this cue down.

A nice ebony/ivory/silver box cue by Bill McDaniel. Very clean work, very high quality, massively underrated for some reason.

Thanks for sharing this story with the forum. When I first heard the story from you at your house, my thoughts were "wow, now that's what a cue chase story is all about." I love hearing stories like that associated with fine cues...they are sometimes journeys really. My feeling is that these stories more often than not overshadow the cues themselves....and they immensely add to the enjoyment of this crazy hobby we all share !!

BTW, congrats on acquiring the big Gus box cue. IMO that cue is the FINEST CUE to have become available in the open market in over 5 years, and it will certainly fit in nicely with your collection. I'm very happy this one is staying here in the states.
