Ivory Ferrules pad or no pad

I don't have a lot of experience with ivory ferrules.. a customer wants me to put a ivory ferrule on his cue. I have heard from some to put a pad under the tip when using ivory ferrules. And some say it doesn't matter.

I just spoke recently to Joel Hercek about this and he believes in pads under ivory.

However, he has found them to be all very different and is pleased with the material he now has that should last him for life. I have great playing cues with both pads and no pads and have tried bad hitting ones with either as well. It all depends on what you are trying to achieve IMO. As to safety of Ivory and how well it stays on, a pad may be helpful from what I have been able to understand in my conversation with Joel.

However, he warned that the wrong pad is not a good thing and I agree.

I put a pad on all ferrules. Makes them last a lot longer since you don't have to face any of the ferrule off to do tip changes.

I agree 100%. I buy them from any one of a number of vendors. They come packs of 50. Especially with Ivory, I would recommend one.

Pad for sure

I would not put a tip on if there was no pad. Play it safe there is a reason why they have always been used.

Ivory Ferrules/pads

Here's my two cents. Most pads are vulcanized fibre AKA fish paper.
Perfectly fine for what it's used for. OB cues I believe uses carbon fiber.
I won't do an Ivory ferrule with out a pad. I've always believed it's a
extra bit of safety for the ferrule. It also serves as a good reminder that you are pushing the life of the tip and need to replace it. I never thought about what Murray said, but that is an added bonus. I personally love the look of ivory with a red pad and a black tip. I usually face mine off at .026 thick. Just to clean off and flatten the face of the pad before I glue on the tip.
I would highly recommend not going any bigger than 5/16 on the tenon. I've replace a lot of 3/8-16 thru threaded ivory ferrules done by other cuemakers. They alway crack right at the high point of the thread.

With todays layer tips you can get away without using the pad with ivory but only if the player or owner likes to play with full tips. If they are the kind that likes it when the tip gets low then you have to use a pad.

I asked Jerry McWorter about this, since he has been doing this for a long time. He has never used a pad, saying it has never presented a problem.

I went with a pad. I only had black .. I don't understand the difference but.... and the ferrule was caped 5/16. I want to thank everyone for there help.

Ivory and pads

I will try to explain this as good as dartman ( I think ) did a few years ago. Ivory is grained, like wood. As the tip mushrooms, it has a tendency to pull the ivory apart. Causing it to chip or split. The pad puts a separation between the tip and pad, so the ferrule does not split.

I always put a pad on ivory.
I also put them on my cues....
I like the look of the pads and it also provides a little protection to the ferrule when tips get real low

INCREDIBLY good point, and probably the best argument I have seen yet for putting a pad between the ferrule and the tip....I have reconsidered my viewpoint on it just on that statement.

Red pad

I have always used the standard .030 pad. Has anyone ever noticed how thick the red pads that Pete tascarella used, Maybe it's the pictures I have seen but man what ever pads he uses sure do look a lot thicker then .030

Take a look at the tascarella cue that jazzpool has for sale and you will see what I mean. Here is the link

I'm not a cue maker, but I play strong, lol. I break with my player, I wouldn't buy a player I couldn't break with. It seems to me, that a pad would help protect the ivory ferrule, especially from breaking the rack with it. I always had a pad on mine. Just a thought. Rod.
