Couple questions . How can you tell if a joint is ivory ? I have heard you will see grains in it and it may appear yellow ? Is any of these true ? and If I want to have a ring replaced at bottom of wrap (position d , i believe) is it possible ?

thanks for the help ,

WoW, first post and this is what you come out of the box with? OK, so be it.
Just about any modification can be done on a cue.
What it comes down to is, does the modification justify the cost?
A 'D' position ring can be replaced but the butt-sleeve will need to removed to get at it.
In order to save the butt-sleeve, the tenon it sits on will be sacrificed.
The b/s tenon would then be replaced with a new one and the b/s slid back on.
Of course the finish in that area will take a hit during all of this so add the cost of refinishing.
Is the cue wrapped? More expense. You see where I'm going with this?

Good Luck with your decision, KJ

KJ answered the collar ring change very well and needs no further discussion.

Often ivory is tough to discern just by looking at it. As far as checking to see if ivory is ivory or a man made substitute you can get a needle and heat to red hot over a flame then in an inconspicuous spot (the face of the joint is a good spot) touch the needle and the odor will let you know what is. Ivory smells like a tooth being drilled.

The only way I know to remove the butt sleeve, is to put it in a lathe & CUT it off, along with the butt cap. That leaves the tenon in tact, but a NEW ring, butt sleeve & butt cap would have to be made & installed. Then cut down to the proper diameter, sanded, sealed & refinished with a clearcoat. Then the claercoat has to be sanded & polished. Then a new wrap would have to be installed. Of coarse if the old butt sleeve was stained, then that operation would be additional. I would charge $200 plus for this repair...JER
If the ring is Ivory add $50. If the butt capp is Ivory add $125.

Yea drilled tooth is good Dick. But I think it smells like burnt toenails! :rotflmao1:

The cue is a Gilbert . I am going to look at it tonight . The person selling it is asking $900 . They say it is ivory because it is white and the ring is discolored . I will not replace the ring for that . I have compared a known ivory joint to a phenolic and could not see any difference . So I know it is difficult . But thanks for all the good information .

I just happened to run across this picture after reading your thread. This is what ivory looks like, but some artifical materials can look fairly similar. Ivory is also a natural material, and doesn't always look the same.
