i bought something they said was ivory, but im not soo sure that it is, is there any test to tell the difference? i almost think that i got ivory colored plastic. i have seen an ivory ferrule before and this doesnt look grainy under the florescent light.

also i was cutting it and it had the little curly q's or pig tail type of shavings...what do you guys think?

thanks

When you cut Ivory it will have a burnt hair smell, this is the best way to tell for sure. You can not always go by the Grain, there are different types Ivory " Hard and Soft depending upon where the Elephant is from" and the grain in Ivory is also effected by where the Piece was cut from the Tusk. The center will have less grain and it will be perfectly White and the grain will increase from there out to the outside of the Tusk.

Take a pin, hold with pliers and heat till red. Now place the point of the pin in an inconspicuous place and smell. It should smell like a tooth being drilled or as has been stated, burning hair.

why dont you take some of those shavings and burn as suggested.if they smell like burned hair it will be ivory.show a little confidence in your nose.

If you know Troy (KOINKID) see if he'll take a look. If your close to Mankato, let me know and I'll take a look for you.

When you stick a hot pin or nail to it if it is plastic it will burn a hole or indention in it. Ivory will just turn black or brown around the edge.
You will be able to tell if it is plastic very easily when you touch it.

i got it on ebay, i didnt pay that much for it. i paid more for the shipping. thanks for all the help tho!!
