Ivory sales....

"The message, Fish and Wildlife officials said, is that U.S. citizens cherish ivory on living animals rather than on a carving or trinket. It is a signal to China to be equally aggressive, to do all it can to block illegal trade that is more robust there than anywhere in the world"

And there you have it, who really thinks that what we do here will influence China in any way?

As someone in the market for a serious high-end cue I have decided anything with ivory is no longer an option. Too much potential for a major hassle, especially with all the traveling I do.

That's a sugar-coated statement. This isn't about personal property or even about the elephants. It's about telling China that the world isn't theirs. The implications are huge, especially for Americans, especially for Americans who love and appreciate just how historically incredible this country is.

You fight for ivory, you fight for China. They're making pawns of you.

Not all wars are fought with guns.

Outlander is right.....sad but true......I'd like to add more cues but am pretty content with what I've collected.

This is another act of Obama acting like a king and just making up law. I don't see where it was voted on by the congress.

I'm afraid you are correct. We'll almost surely see more states adopt similar legislation as CA and others have already done. Cue makers, most that I know, are done with ivory.

The good news is that there are so many other options available and I'm not referring to faux ivory.

China thanks you for your support... Gross

You think it was the Russians or the Chinese who came-up with "Make America great again." ?

The world is laughing at us.

Just an FYI. Items can be sold if the ivory is less than 200 grams which is 7.04 ounces. Thats about half of what the buttend of a cue weighs, so its pretty safe that its still legal to ship cues as long as its not going to the 4 states where there is a ban.(NY, NJ, CA & not sure of the 4th)

200 grams.........28.3495 grms = 1 Ounce.......7.0548 ounces.......maximum allowable under the Feds.

And the laws here ENCOURAGES MORE POACHING.

Where are they going to get their ivory since we can't export the tons of decades old ivory that are here already????????????

EXACTLY! KILL MORE ELEPHANTS.

If the US govt had any brains and really wanted to reduce the demand for poached ivory, allow exportation of ivory that are here already.

Then again , we'd rather cut century old trees to make paper than grow hemp.
And who's going to donate to the bleeding heart World Wildlife Fund when elephant poaching goes down dramatically ?

When they seize tons of it they should flood the market and sell it dirt cheap, then use the proceeds to benefit schools or something like that.

Flooding the market with it that cheap will lower it's value and demand.

But noooo, let's limit the sale of it and destory what is seized, only making it more rare and valuable.

What he said.

p.s. I don't believe it is about the Elephant. The countries in Africa who are turning a blind eye to poaching need to step up to the plate too.

7 ounces is a lot of ivory for a pool cue. You can pretty much get loaded Black Boar with ivory joint and still have under 7oz in it.

Does the term "ivory laundering" exist yet?

It's not about the elephants. They're f#cked, and everyone knows it. Their only prayer is scientists whipping them up in a lab.

Why are you quoting me talking about elephants? I'm only trying to relate the article to our niche community.

This just in from our newsroom...

Our news correspondent in China reports the following:

The Chinese leadership called an emergency meeting today to discuss the country's reaction to the United States ban on ivory sales. Sources close to the ruling party report that government elites are pooping in their pants because they are so scared of the U.S. action. The police and military have been put on High Alert in case there is rioting in the streets demanding that the leadership institute a similar ban.

The Communist Party leadership issued a statement saying "While we are glad to see the U.S. making previously-legal activities illegal by fiat (we do it all the time here), we are concerned what their ivory bans means for the future of China. All comrades are encouraged to remain calm and follow regime orders."

Stay tuned for the news at 10 when we report the reactions by other world leaders like Kim Kardashian, Justin Bieber and Elvis.

200 grams? That probably is true. But the potential hassle (TSA, some eager young Game Warden or Customs person) makes any ivory in a cue too muck risk for too little reward. Does not matter if you are right or not, they can make things annoying. Sure you can get a lawyer, get your cue back, get the charges dismissed and 'prove' you're right. Meanwhile, I will avoid any cue with ivory in it and avoid any chance of being inconvenienced.
