J&d Customs Winners!

Jeff: Read Zim Racks offer in his post above. It's natural to see this as being a little fishy but it's just my opinion. Congrats on the cue. Looking forward to reading your feedback on it. Maybe when you see Sal or "Efrin Reyas" (Efren Reyes) in your pool room you could let them hit some balls with it too.

I did throw my name into the hat on their offer...and had ZERO real hope of getting one.

Frankly, I expected somebody like Gary Nolan (bushwhacker) to get one. For one, he was/is a Top Shelf player....and he's got an incredibly wide breadth of experience with just about any cue you could think of. Having his knowledge and experience made him (or somebody like him in these respects) an obvious choice (if he even offered to try it out). That, and he's been around the AZB blocks for quite awhile....and is very well known for his excellent reputation.

I say - Congrats to the winners. Be sure to keep us all posted on how the cues rack and stack against the "competition." While we would have all liked to win one of these cues to try out...now we're all waiting in the wings to see if we need to snatch one up for ourselves.

Are u guys serious? I am new to the forum, but not to billiards. I am from New Orleans and have never met or talked to Jim before Tuesday when I called him to thank him from choosing me. I understand the disapointment of not being picked as I never dreamed I would win. He asked for emails on why you should win, I sent mine and won. That simple. I joined this forum because I love pool and collecting pool cues. It is a shame that instead of welcoming new blood to the forum and congratulating them on winning you complain it is not one of the regulars and say my posts wont carry any weight.

I will post the pics and honest opinions when I get the cue as per the contest rules... whether you choose to read them is up to you. I really hope this is not how you treat all newbies to this forum. If anyone has any questions feel free to pm me...

Hmmm

To the forum,

This is Jim from J&D CUSTOMS and have been reading and am getting the impression that5 some aren't happy.
The cue givaway was yes to help our business and to promote our product.
It WAS NOT a popularity contest , who has the better name , it was decided by the emails and the thoughts in those emails.
Yes We are new to the forum , and really don't know who is new and who is not.
It was done honestly and fairly and decided by our families as they read through the emails.
Thanx to all that supported the idea and we thank you very much for all your support and backing.
Cues will be sent out next week and I hope it's nothing but possitive from the two deserving gentleman that we picked to test our cues.
Good luck guys and hope to see the feedback soon!
Thanx again,
Jim

Why don't you share with us the reasons you picked the people you picked? The biggest problem with you picking people who are unknown to us is that they have no credibility. However, if you tell us why you picked them, perhaps it will give us some information on why we should even consider their opinions.

also just a guess but judging from the location of the winners I would say geography played a part in deciding the winners.. Seeing as both New Orleans ans Cali are pretty far from Indiana. I would think J&D customs might be trying to spread in difrent regional areas other than thier own. Good idea to me. I do not mean to be harsh, but when I found out I won I was very excited. i just got back from vacation in San antonio where my wife lost my wallet with both our id's and almost $1,000.00 in cash. I was pretty bumed to say the least.

So when I got home and got the email about winning I was very excited. Then I read some of the posts here and can't believe it. I thank those who congratulated us winners and I will post everything as soon as I get the cue. I am sorry some are not happy but I entered and won and I won't let you ruin it for me.

I think one new poster getting the nod would be ok, but 2 is a bit odd. Especially with guys like Christopher Grader (BOGEY54311), Gary Nolan (BUSHWHACKER), and Zim's Rack in the pool. I would venture to say that all of them have held in their hands almost every single custom cuemaker's cue in America. Ranging from Toe Boy Sneaky Pete's to 8 point Tad's. I couldn't think of anyone better than Chris, Gary, Zim, or Marcus, Aaron, and the list goes on. I think if I read a reveiw from Marcus, Chris, or any of the other guys I mentioned I would most certainly read it with confidence knowing that all these guys have played with and held almost every type of cue out there. I'm not being a sore loser ( I submitted an email as well for a friend of mine ) but if you want a guy to plop down 650 for a plain wrapless cue with one shaft. I would bet that the only chance you have is to have the cue in the hands of one of these guys. It would just be smarter marketing. I like the idea you did, but you just needed to take it one step further. I personally wouldn't spend 650 for a plain jane anything unless it said Zylr, Tad, Prewitt, Schick, or anything with a HUGE NAME. I have yet to spend over 3 for a plain jane from a unknown cuemaker and that one had 2 shafts. Well I just want to add that I don't have sour grapes either. I submitted my email for my friends Ismael and Tuna that have played almost everywhere with almost everything and helped Judd fuller start his career in cuemaking as well as Jim Buss. I do want to congradulate the winners and if this was a random drawing I don't think anyone would be upset. But everyone of the big names entered and not one got a nod. I have to agree, a bit fishy.

If you lost your wallet in a pool hall, PM me with which one you lost it at and I'll bet I can get it back (minus the money...I doubt it's there, and if it is than I won't take one dime). Being from San Antonio and all, I know almost every player from every pool hall. If not than I still congradulate you on your recent cue win. I don't think any of us have a problem with you 2 guys it's with the way it was run I guess   So many other established names and 2 new comers win it. That's all....

Tony

I would not call it a fishy deal. I would instead call it a good idea with poor follow up. They probably took into consideration the loaction of the winners more than other issues. With them being new to the forum they not have a good understanding of who the best choices might have been. Not that there is anything wrong with there choice. As far as giving the cues the most exposure and credibility to az members there should have been more thought into who would give them the best exposure.
good luck on your cues
will

Thank you Tony, but unfortunately i did not get a chance to play pool while in San Antonio..It was lost at Schlitterbahn (best water park ever). atleast it wasn't lost till the last day...So we got to enjoy the rest of the trip. If you ever come to the Big Easy just let me know.

Ah, you lost it in New Braunfels. That's about a 45 min. drive from me, but I'll give you a buzz if I'm headed towards the Big Easy.

Another point..

Besides being new and no one knowing anything about you, much less the 'speed' you play at. There is a big difference having a 10 evualate a cue versus a '4' or '5'.

This kind of reminds me of the way Bernie Friend got into the IPT, and we all know how that has gone .... lol

Personally, I would never plop down $650 for a Plain Jane either.

Speaking for myself (but I'm sure others will agree)...
I have nothing against the winners of the contest, I don't even know who you are or what your speed it, what your business it, nothing about you. I understood the idea of the contest was to get a good evaluation of the cues considering many aspects, and to market their cues outside of their local area. Well, I think that AZBilliards Forum covers about all 50 states and at least 10 countries and there ARE credible members of the forum that have been on here a long time that (from what I understand) meet the requirements to win the contest.

Do you get more exposure from a guy playing with your cue during league night or in a minor tournament or by letting everyone from all over the globe, that has an interest in the cue, read about it from someone that they know or know of and trust!

Again, nothing against the winners, I too wish you luck and am looking forward to reading what you have to say about the cue. Better marketing could have come from this contest idea. I think it's a great idea and may give away a couple of cues myself in the near future.

Thanks,
Zim

Huh, i wouldnt be to worried either brand new to the forum AND a brand new cue !!!!!!!!!! What a DOOR PRIZE............

This is Derek from J&D. I'm going to try to answer the questions about why we picked who we did.
Geography did play a part, it's not feasible for us to travel the country for everyone's opinion. We also had generous offers of people who would try the cue, review it and send it back. There were also offers to take it to a tourney, let as many people try it and review it, then it would be raffled off.
As Jim said, us and our wives sat down with the 100+ emails to try to decide. It was not possible to cross reference the names on the emails with the names in the forums as many just sent in thier real names. They only way for us to decide was based solely on the emails.
Truthfully, we were looking for someone that truly wanted a cue from us. Not just to try out and send back or raffle off, but someone that would keep the cue for some time. It does us more good to get and opinion today, and maybe, a year from now. Is there any problems that have showed up over time? These are not questions that can't be answered if the cue is sent back or raffled off.
We are truly sorry if our decisions did not fit with the popular opinion. I would love to have the opinion of the entire AZ forum but that is not possible. Thanx, and I hope that answers the questions. Congrats again to the winners Mike and Jeff.

I guess I'm glad I didn't even see the offer. I would have written the same thing. I assume a lot of people said that they would gladly try it out and return it to you, and give an honest review. I consider that type of generosity a strength in these groups.

Tough job. I don't envy you guys and what you had to go through, and what you're going through right now.

Congratulations to the winners. I hope they give you guys (J&D) what you're looking for.
