Like so many things, reality kind of kills the fun. Most of the jokes were scripted by thew show's writers, and the actors were briefed on the subjects before the show. The only thing that was real was the contestants' choice of which square to call on.

It was still classic Americana and the timing had to be perfect for many of those jokes to work and I would bet a lot of it was also spontaneous adlibbing.
