I think this is an important point JB.
Some of the communications complaints you have had may be because of this issue. Chinese characters and/or Chinese source (servers etc) can get an email filtered out. It's one of the hazards of working from your location.
I think it's important that your potential customers, customers, and contacts know that they should check their spam. If possible they should specifically allow emails from you.
People should know to check their spam box when they don't get a message they expect anyway, but I think in your case it would be best to be pro-active and tell people they should check their spam box.
.
I wish I could blame it on Gmail but the fact of it is that I simply suck at email. I don't know I used to think email was really great but now I kind of hate it. Same goes for PMs. They both multiply like rabbits or even faster than rabbits. I answer then and then I have 10-20 new replies from those answers and 5 more new emails and it keeps going.
I have done a terrible job on my website of making it clear that we can do almost anything because I continue to get very basic questions like can you put the strap on the back instead of the side? So Marcel and I are working on revamping it with an FAQ and a picture guide of every option we have ever done.
Right now in order to answer an email it kind of looks like this:
I answer with a description of what we can do, then I go and find an eample on the site and bring the relevant photos into the email and caption each one. I do this for each point that it requires.
I discuss options, things that are possible, leather types, quite often have to explain the various types of leather, what is stamping, what is carving and why does one cost more than the other? I explain pocket lengths, widths, heights, zipper placement, handle placement, tubes vs. padded fabric, can we do a ball in the lid.......
All these are natural questions by people who want real true custom work where they DO get to choose almost every option to their exact specs. I mean if a person asks me to make them a pocket that is 17.3" long, 2.35" high and 5" wide I will say no, we can only fit 4.75" wide on the case and the rest is no problem.
The issue is (was) that I was the only point man for a while and for each customer they send an email and that's the only thing they see from their side. From my side it's their email and 20 others like it and frankly some times I just kind of shut down and didn't want to deal with them. It's much easier to run to AZB and talk pool or even to talk cases in semi-real time. I almost feel better if I write out a long detailed post with relevant images of cases and options than if I put all the same info into an email because I know that it's not going to just one person.
Anyway, I doubt very many people have lost our responses due to Google's spam filter although coincidentally we found a customer's response to us in our shiny new spam box right after Javier's notification that ours had gone into the bit bin.
But I will certainly make a note of this for our customers and advise them to check their spam boxes if they don't see responses from us in the future. I have asked Karen and Marcel to please try hard to answer each inquiry in 24 hours if at all possible. With their help I should be able to pick up my pace as well and jump in with answers more often.
Your project cases are on the way, I hope you do something very fun with them.
