Jesse Engle should have a sponsor...........

He nas a plan............

He should be encouraged to get an education of some sort beyond high school as pool is not a very lucrative career choice and even if it is you have been on the road all the time. I don't know why somebody would pursue a career in pool

This is coming from the horses mouth to me. Jesse wants to wait a year and just have some fun before college.

I guess I can't blame him. Pool can be alot of fun especially if you can play like that.

He's a smart kid but a kid. I think he'll do the right thing.

In the mean time he's getting a great eduacation in the school of hard knocks. And having fun doing it.

That was his answer when I suggested he should have went directly to college.

I qiut after a few years with the idea of going back and never got there.

I hope he makes it.............I'm sure he will............

But if he doesn't we all have one h-ll of a pool player to watch for a quite a few years.

He should make up a resume..............

if he spent some time writing letters to celebrities and some rich business people he would get some sponsorship money in no time, there are a lot of rich famous people who love pool and love staking players. I don't know why more players don't do it, maybe it's a pride thing and they feel like they are begging, but it works.

We talked about this a few months ago. I should have sat down and helped him.

Your suggestion is great. I know there are people with deep pockets that would just love to be a part of his happening..........

Thanks geno.

That's nice to hear

I am obviously jealous of the talent professional players have. I would love to be able to play like that. However, I wouldn't want to live the life they have to live. I look at even the most successful guys in the sport- say Mika, SVB, Deuel, etc. and I see that they have to travel so much. It would seem to make an ordinary life next to impossible. However, to each his own

IMHO - He needs to market himself, just as you would market any other product that you're looking to receive sponsorship for.

A good well written media package and sponsorship letter will go a long way. It doesn't need to to be over the top, but something clean and well thought out with his background, objectives, photos and perhaps a list of potential sponsorship packages available to companies would go a long way to showing his maturity level and seriousness.

You have to be able to show how sponsoring him would deliver ROI as well - that's key. What is the benefit to sponsoring companies?

Give options for both cash sponsorships and "in-kind" merchandise sponsorships that he can sell to defray costs - may sponsors will be more likely to donate product than money right now.

Invest a few hundred dollars and get a professionally done website where he can direct traffic to for news about his professional successes, upcoming appearances, tips on playing, etc - that's another opportunity to get his name and his sponsor's names out there as well - give them a button ad and a link back to their sites from his.

Bottom line - treat this 100% like a business (as it is) - demonstrate benefits to sponsors, show them what they'll get for their investment in the brand (him) and you'll have a much better chance for success.

A refreshing departure from the standard claptrap-Very good!!

I've watched Jesse at the Olympia Open. I was able to catch part of his 9-ball match against Bowman, the championship match with genomachino, and an 8-ball match where Jesse played a friend of mine. He certainly does carry himself in a professional manner and is definitely great to watch. Though he seems very shy; here is an interview. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RrdfqpPvggI

Why not a package- deal Beau and Jesse- Jay

Shane wanted Danny Janes to be his sponsor so Bad. In 07 I was with Shane at the derby and entertained offers in Shane's behalf, and many people had offers, very limited cash. cues by all makers. Jacoby had the best offer then. I'd rather see a backer for both- I like the independent guys like Danny Harriman. I'd like to see someone like Jay H. do some guiding- I think he is a good business man and a man of his word!! I also think the 2 of them together is a better idea- and we all know why. Peer pressure- These 2 have real talent- and we don't need the drugs and alcohol -to suck the life from Them!! Mark

Seems like a nice guy for sure.

Thanks Mark for the kind words. Beau has been a no-show lately so I don't know what he's up to as far as pool is concerned. Jesse on the other hand has exhibited a willingness to travel and play wherever there's money to be made. That's why I made the offer I did.

Jesse and I have spoken already about professional pool and what I believe may be a good course of action for him. He's his own man though and I'm confident that he will make the best decision for himself.

All any players need to do is model themselves after Ralf Souquet. Do what Ralf does and you won't have a problem.

What does Ralf do that is special you might say?

He treats his career like a business. He has professional letterhead that he uses to communicate with. He is someone that sponsors feel comfortable with. He writes well and thoughtfully. He makes a schedule and sticks to it. When he goes to an event he conducts himself with the utmost professionalism.

Pretty simple stuff.

Your so right about "He's His Own Man............

Hi there Jay,

Like so many times before you hit the nail right on the head.

Jess Engle is his own man and that is one distinct things that I really admire about him. This is one huge factor that is good for any sponsor that picks this kid up. He almost cetainly won't let them down.

I've been around Jesse for about 2 years playing in mini tournaments with him and jousting regularly with cheap sets and have been able to see the real person continually emerge. You really get to see things when you are right there every week.

And it's all good.

When I look at Jesse I look at him like a father. My son is now 36 and all you fathers out there know what I mean. I look at the things this young man does with life in genaral and how he treats others and acts and have nothing to say except it's all good. If I was his father and could see the inside the lines things that I see I would be extra proud.

I give alot of credit to the parents. They have to be pretty special people and it shines through with Jesse. Some people just have the knack for making right decisions in life but usually it is a learned process that comes directly from the caring parents that have been there right from the start.

I met Jesse's parents one time at a tournament and wasn't really feeling too good and had to play soon so I didn't really get to talk to them for to long. I could tell they were very proud of their son and should be. They know all the things that I have learned over the past 2 years. They know he is his own man and I could just feel the confidence that they have in their son not only with his pool ability but his general overall ways of life and how he carries himself.

Whatever happens I'm confident in this young mans ability to take care of himself. And to treat others around him good. He would be the perfect fit for any sponsor anywhere that is looking for a good image to support their product. Jesse will not let them down. What you see is what you would get and it's real.

But nobody should ever let his calm demeanor fool them. When Jesse Engle gets to the table and smells blood they better get ready because they are going to have to play their best to beat this kid. He's fearless and has that burning desire to win that you see in so many champions over the years. I don't think this is something you can teach but is something we have to learn gradually as we go along.

When jesse aquires the ability to stay at the high level he is capable of for one solid week it's going to be pretty scary. This is the final element he needs to get over the top. This is what makes all the champions winners. Getting there and staying there.

It's more than just being in stroke. It's more than just being in focus. It's almost an out of body experience. For the players that have ever been there they know what I mean. And I'm sure jesse is experiencing this now but just can't stay there all the time. Once he learns how to get there and stay there it will be a sight to behold. And a whole lot of fun to watch.

Kind of like Mika winning all the tournaments he did over the past 2 years. He was there. To win he knows he has to stay there. To that place where there is no room for second guessing or indecision. You know what you need to do and you just do it and get it done. He might not be the best player there but he has that ability to turn it on and keep it there. Any let down from the opponent and it's over. That's the guy that wins all the hill hill matches. The guy that can get to this magical place of total focus and concentration.

Jesse is on this track right now and I can see it. If a player was never been there they wouldn't understand. Many of us have been there for a short period of time and it was awsome. Imagine being there all the time and being able to turn it on like a switch. I was there personally for a period in my pool career and didn't really understand how special this was. I was just trying to win money.

But yes Jay, Jesse is his own man and it's a good thing for sure. I think he will get there for sure. It will be fun to watch...........

Have a good day Geno........

That he does

He certainly does need a sponsor Gene. I have only had the pleasure of watching him on streams but have enjoyed his play to the fullest. He is a very talented "young" man and looks like he has a bright future ahead of him. I would say he has had some very good seasoning around him, IF you are the one who has been helping him progress you have done a fine job Gene. Best of luck to Jessse in the future.

Can't take any credit............

Like all of us we try to help the younger players but for the most part it is up to them to pick up the things that they know are going to help them.

I couldn't tell you the nights I saw Beau and Jesse on the table just trying to figure out different things on the table.

We roomed at a couple of tournaments toegether and both did pretty good. Between the 2 of up we got 2 firsts and 2 seconds and they were pretty good sized tournaments.

I took Jesse to Walmart and we loaded up on good food to eat at the tournaments. I really tried to stress to him how you need the good food to keep your energy high for the long haul. I think he really learned something there he can keep with himself for a long time. He even borrowed some of my food one day because he kind of ran out of good stuff. I told him to eat what ever he wanted. We're here together. Almost like we were a team. And that's the way it should be with friends .

It's things like this and so many others that a young guy like Jesse can keep in his aersenal or discard and ignore. Every weapon you have when you are in any competition is huge.

If you run out of gas it doesn't matter who you are. Your not going to get there. It's terrible to lose a tournament because you got weak and shakey because you didn't eat right.

When we are younger we can get away with eating the junk to some degree. But if we eat right and are young it can be pretty rewarding as far as the energy.

But like I said, Jesse has the knack for picking up the good stuff. When he's at these tourny's and he sees something he doesn't know you can bet he will have it figured out real soon.

But like I said. Us other guys are just there. It's up to a young guy like Jesse to pick up on things he sees and puts it to use in his own game.

Minnesota has some pretty good players overall. It's as tough there as anywhere in the country. Coming up through the ranks he's had alot of players to pick things up from. These player are too many to name and if I did i would for sure leave a few out. But their all important because they were all a huge part of Jesses pool life.

But the biggest thing he has kept is just being jesse. But knowing the young man I don't think that wil be a problem.

I agree with you 100% on someone being themselves with their own ability and understand exactly what you mean by just trying to help. Either way it helps young players to have people like yourself to talk with and just be around on a daily basis, not to mention I see he is getting in a lot of big events which is no substitute for experience and learning.

At 41 now I only wish I had the opportunity to be around top players when I was young. My learning curve to an A player was a long hall with more effort of having to dig for info and work which could have been simplified by proper guidance at a younger age.

Not meaning that an A player is anything great nor am I anything but a small fish in a big pond but a lot don't reach A level so I'll be happy to be in that class or maybe WAS as I really don't play much anymore. There are so many great players out there being good just isn't good enough any more.

I think Beau is moving to California...........

Thanks Mark for the kind words. Beau has been a no-show lately so I don't know what he's up to as far as pool is concerned. Jesse on the other hand has exhibited a willingness to travel and play wherever there's money to be made. That's why I made the offer I did.

Just figure I'd give a heads up on Beau. I don't think he would mind.

Beaus wife got accepted at a college in California. I don't know what Beau has been doing the last month but I'm assuming he's working as much as he can to build up the bankroll.

I had the pleasure of getting to know Beau the last year and a half and it's been all good. We've had some terrific battles during this period and I have seen his best and Beau has seen mine. My only regret is that we couldn't have done battle while I was in my prime but I'm sure I got his attention.

He pushed me further and further and that is what I needed for the last few years. It was a battle to try and come out on top each week in the local tournaments. Plus we battled it out in a few finals of some bigger ones also.

He's a fierce competitor but at the same time one of the nicest guys you would ever meet.

I'm in Milwaukee right now teaching and working and it saddens me to think that Beau won't be there when I visit Minnesota this fall.

I wish Beau and Nicole the best of it in California. What a great adventure for a great young couple. That's what life is all about.

I wonder if California is ready for Beau...........Look out.............this kid can play......
