Maybe this doesn't belong here, but it is a story from one cuemaker to others. I was a 19 year old soldier attending the Army's Engineering school at Ft Belvoir, Va.(14 miles from Washington DC). Everyone was released on leave, on the eve of the inaugeration. It snowed about 14" the night before ( I've heard recently that it was 8"). We soldiers did what all soldiers do when they are on leave. WE GOT DRUNK. Some time late into the night we began to look for a place to spend the night & found that there wasn't even a USO cot to be had. Sometime the next morning ( about 6 AM), I was awaken with an old Chineese woman beating me with a broom, while I was sleeping in a booth of a Chineese restarant. I thought she was going to kill me. There were 6 of us who rushed out of that place & ran down the street. We stumbled down the street & realized we were directly across the street from the reviewing stand, for the inaugeration. We took up positions & I was EXACTLY accross the street, when President Kennedy made his famous speach "ASK NOT WHAT YOUR COUNTRY CAN DO FOR YOU, BUT WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR YOUR COUNTRY" As a 19 year old, I was so moved that I was in tears. Latter as I was a Green Beret soldier, I met THE PRESIDENT, but even that did not effect me as much as that speach I heard,as a young man on that eventful day when he spoke & I felt his words were for me alone to hear. This could not happen today, as only by invitation can you be near this spot in Washington, on this day. I feel very blessed that I was there on that day & hope the the words of this NEW President can have such an impression on others...JER...

Cool story, Jerry. I hope you are right about the new president. I have my reservations, though. But I do hope.

Exciting!

I am excited by this country's choice of president!

I only wish that Obama had picked Hilary as his running mate...what a force to be reconned with!

Great things are in store for this country in the next 8 years, now that the Republicans are out of the control!!! JMHO :p

The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence ... until you get caught in the barbed wire trying to get there. I wish there were no such thing as republican & democrat & electoral college. The ship is broken in the middle & both ends will sink unless they can mend for the common cause of survival. The men I repect most in life & history, the men who represented humanity & the USA the very best were not concerned in the least with associating themselves with a political party. They were concerned with being strong & honest men that do the right things to make their home a safer & happier place. The political party associasions are for followers, not leaders. A true leader is strong enough to have his own mind & will not tollerate silly labelling. Until the men & women of this nation can get off the couch & learn to think for themselves, as well as teach their children to do the same, we'll never have a leader worth following. Just my opinons.

This all sounds great but if you believe any soul in this country has even one chance in a million of becoming president without being either 1. a Democrat or 2. a Republican your living in a dream world. How many times over the years have people tried to make it more than a 2 party system to no avail. All of the others who ran this year combined did not get 2% of the vote and not one electoral vote. It's not just the tremendous amount of money that needs to be raised (Ross Perot had plenty of money) but also the network of workers the two parties have established from every small neighborhood up. You have to make promises and lies and whatever else your party expects to have any chance to go anywhere in your party.

Did I vote for Obama? Absolutely. Is he who I really wanted to vote for? Absolutely not. As usual, it just boiled down to two choices in the end and they were bad and worst. Take your pick. I just feel that if Obama accomplishes 1% of what he says he will I'll be better off where as if McCain was to accomplish 1% of what he wanted I'd be worse off.

I totally agree with Eric. Now, my inauguration story: Way back in days of yore, 1957
in fact, I was a young sergeant in the 325th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd
Airborne Division. I was selected to carry the guide-on (Regimental banner) for the Eisenhower's inaugural parade.
Received a nice plaque for our "hike for Ike". It was bitter cold
and we had to get out of the sack at 3 in the morning for a noon parade.
Typically Army-hurry up and wait. A great experience as I admired Ike.

PS. I'm not sure I would of volunteered to of marched in today's parade.
I guess its something like "earning your stripes" like Ike did.

Cool stories both of you. I don't know if I deserve the right but I will say it anyhow. Thems musta been the good ol days.

Out of curiousity's sake how about a picture of the plaque if you still have it around.

Thanks Mike.

Maybe it is a dream world, maybe not. Yesterday was Martin Luther King day. He had a dream, too. Today it was no longer a dream but reality.

I'm sure Obama loves his country & will do his best. Time will tell what that best truly is.

You could not put it any better than that.

Great memory for you Jer and thanks for the story. I hope so too Jer. I remember that speech lilke it was yesterday as well. I didn't have the 'front row seat' you enjoyed but I sure remember that day.

I don't necessairly believe that Obama is a great leader... I don't know. I know he's a great orator and I sure hope this 'movement' can get things going the right way and I sure like that his election signals a greater voice for the little guy.

I heard one politician say in the last few days they are like the Cripts and the Bloods it is that bad. Many actually hate each other. Morning Joe said when he was elected in the beginning he would sometimes go sit on the other side and talk till he was warned against it. They don't cross the isle now at all. It is a bad situation. I worked for the Obama campaign and I can tell you, no matter what you think of him or his experience, he may be the perfect guy for us right now.

What I like about Obama, is that if you listen to what he says, he "gets it".
For the first time in a long time, we have a president whos intellect and ideas rise above.
What better time than now, to have a constitutional law scholar as a leader? Everyone who knows the guy is awed by his brilliant mind.
I really believe that we now have some hope to rise above the mindless, cult-like ideology that has been so detrimental to us all. Time will tell!

Right On Sheldon!

We need a young, open minded, guy who "gets it", Not some washed up old guy who might die leaving Palin as President and who would sink this country further into the dirt. I'm not sure we could have survived with McCain.

Truly Wonderful story by the way!

I was not intending to change the direction of your post, it is just that your last sentence seemed like a good lead in.
