Jim Murnak Custom Case Review

Will queue for cues
Silver Member
Well, my custom case arrived last night and, I have to say, it is incredible. The case is much more streamlined than I thought it would be. The case actually seems pretty light as well. It's about as light as my Talisman case and much more compact.

I ordered the case a custom length due to all of my new cues being 60 inchers and the cues fit perfectly. The fit and finish of the case is definitely first rate! I'll post some pictures of the case when I get home today.

Thanks Zeed ...

for the info. I still want to get one, although I
can not afford to now.

Now, does the pockets work out good for
organization of your things and have enough
space. I think that part of a case's merits
belong to how convenient a case is to play
with. I have seen many cases, although good
looking, looked as though there would be
inconveniences to them that would an
irritation to me as a player.

If you like a case except it is bulky and heavy,
or you have to dig the cue out of the tubes everytime,
then, to me, these are design flaws. Bigger cases
that don't adequate shoulder padding, and different
things like this, lower my personal ratings of a case.

As a player, I want my case to be good looking,
stylish, and convenient for playing and/or traveling.

Congratulations Zeeder!! Good to know they are finally getting them out also. Thanks for the review it will make the wait for mine a little more tolerable.

Holy smokes, that is a phenomenal looking case. Jim has not really done his cases justice on the pics he has given us or the info. After seeing those pics of that case I am pretty amazed at how awesome the cases are coming from such a new case builder. That looks like a case of the same quality of a Whitten or Justis. JM really needs a website showing pics of that high quality.

If there is only one suggestion I would make to JM it would be to somehow seal the top of the inside of the case where the tubes are, aka make it such that the space between the tubes is not open and instead is flat and level with the tops of the tubes. Small change though, that case looks unreal and those are a steal at the price he is offering the AZ members.

Beautiful work Jim and congratulations Zeeder.
You picked a fine looking case.

Thanks to everyone for the compliments! The case is great and is was a great value, even at the $285 I paid for it.

ZDR,

The case looks very nice. How tightly do the shafts and butt fit in the case? I'm sure the pictures don't do it justice, but how is the finish/dye? Can you elaborate on the diagnal pockets (ie size/usefullness)? Also, the quality of the zippers and latch?

One other question, the shafts look very difficult to remove, is this the case?

Thanks,

Jim

Since the lid puts pressure on the tubes and the jps stick up a little there is very little movement when the case is closed. When it's open there's a decent amount of space for the cues to move.

The dye is fantastic. I was expecting a little more black and a little less red, but I still think it looks great.

The pocket sections are very interesting. They're not as accessible as a Talisman Tribal where it zips all the way open but the diagonal zippers give you good access to the different pocket sections. The nylon lining of the pockets is quite flexable so as to allow you to fit as much as possible in the different pockets. The zippers and latch quality are first rate. The latch is different from any other case I've had because you have to push down on the release and pull the top forwrd and then lift it up. I already like it better than snaps though because snaps can get difficult to close or to the point where it won't stay closed all that well.

One of the shafts is long enough to remove without putting the case on it's side but the others aren't. I have some extra spacers from my Whitten so I may use those to raise the shafts a touch.

How in the world do you get your shafts out???

Does the latch look like it's going to survive?

Will this last in a bar?

Since the top's hinge is the leather itself, do you think that will detract from the look? Will that leather hold up?

Fred <~~~ gotta get me one

Like I said earlier I plan to put some small spacers in the bottom to raise the shafts a bit, but right now I have to use inertia. :D

The latch looks very sturdy. I guess we'll see how it survives though.

The case looks to be very well put together and it should last just fine.

It's very thick leather and I think it will last quite a long time and I don't think it will detract from the looks. We shall see though.

I'm going to be using this as my day-to-day case so I'll keep everyone abreast of how it holds up.

That is one of the only concerns I have. It looks like a really solid and really well built case but that leather conecting the lid to the case has to bend every time you open the case and I cannot help but think that will crease over time and eventually wear out to the point of tearing and the lid comes loose from the case.

I would like to see either a seperate lid and two latches, one on each side such that it slides on kind of like a Thomas case and then latches shut. Or else maybe a metal bar on the back of the case and the lid attached by folding a piece of leather around the bar and stiching it together such that when you open the lid the thing tilts and the leather around the bar holds the lid yet it lets the lid tilt. Hard to explain and I cannot think of anything to use as an example. Simply the back of the lid connected to the case via leather wrapped around a bar allowing the lid to pivot though...

{edit} Actually on the one pic of the case you can see the lid is attached with rivits. Where those are instead some metal is connected to the body of the case and the leather on the lid is connected to the metal such that when the case opens the leather and metal work like a hinge.

I think it is made from a tooling leather and is at least as thick as any heavy belt you own. I'm hoping that as mine breaks in, it becomes a little more flexable, so the lid stays open wider on its own.

Since it is such nice leather, I find myself being a little protective of it, but that is because I really, really like it.....alot!

A little VASALINE rubbed in the Swing Spot Might HELP ;)
