Jimmy Reid- Disliked?

The first thing I thought is why is Cuetech busting Jimmy's chops?

And why pick on Jimmy about something that he doesn't even know ever happened - a so called rumor.

You could get the same results by substituting anyone's name in place of Ried. I wonder how many rumors we can ask about Cuetech?

Shorty, volume one goes over his diamond system with one, two, three rail kicks. Didn't get to 2 & 3.

How about dem Bears.

The 1985 Super bowl shuffle will be on at 3:30 PM.

(IMO) of Jimmy Reid.

I first saw Hippy Jimmy when he came through here (St. Louis) with Barbara in the late '60's or early '70's. He played awesome and was taking off scores like crazy. He was a typical pool player (not at all a hustler) for those times. Almost all top players were hippy type back then. Marino, Cole, etc.
Some of my fondest memories of Jimmy and his abilities came from watching the ring games at tournaments. The three constant contestants in these were Jimmy, Keith & Louie. At almost every tournament held for about 6 or 8 years - people would call ahead to see if there would be a ring game knowing that Jimmy, Keith & Louie would be there. I think they were as big a draw (if not bigger) as the tournament for many spectators. The level of play was excellent. The three of them were not at all combative but actually comical. They were playing their hearts out but had a mutual respect for each other. There were many other great players who got into these ring games but not as consistently as these three.
As I age, I can certainly understand what must be very frustrating for Jimmy to not be able to play up to the level he remembers. If any of the previous stories are true, I can only say that Jimmy really feels and believes what he is quoted as saying - ..."Show me someone who enjoys losing, and I'll show you a loser!"
I will always remember Jimmy as a Hellava.

I was at the Open where this happened. It was the 1st and only time the Open was held at the Virginia Beach Convention Center. They got into an arguement over a bad foul called and then Jimmy proceeded to talk and walk around the table and yes spit on the floor trying to shark Carlos when Carlos was shooting. Carlos asked him to please sit down and be quiet, Jimmy refused and they exchanged words again and finally Carlos got the ref (Scott Smith was the tournament director who had a friend helping him out as ref) at that time to please make him sit down and stop all the garbage that was going on.I believe Jimmy won the match and when they ran into each other outside they exchanged words again and when Jimmy poked Carlos in the stomach with his case to make a point Carlos took that as an act of aggression and hit Jimmy twice in the face. Jimmy called the cops, Carlos was arrested, Barry kicked him out of the Open and the next day Jimmy showed up for his next match with the whole side of his face bruised along with a black eye. The charges were dropped as long as Carlos left Virginia. Carlos would have never hit Jimmy if Jimmy had not poked him in the stomach with his case. Yes i know Carlos personally, that is why i was there watching his match, i also like Jimmy. But i also feel that BOTH of them should have been kicked out of the open after the exhibition they both put on. On a side note to this. They had been close friends for a few years and both used to go out drinking and partying with their wives and girlfriends at that time. After talking with Carlos after it happened i asked him why he hit him and he told me a story that i cannot repeat here out of respect for Carlos. But i will say that after a different incident a year before(where Jimmy disrespected carlos) that Carlos let drop. It (the earlier incident) just kept eating away at Carlos and when they played at the Open and Jimmy disrespected Carlos again by his antics, Carlos just snapped and Carlos hitting him was the end result............mike

The year was 1996.It was the year Rodney beat Efren in the finals. The referees were gathered by Barry. He got a bunch of us that were of a certain APA skill level to serve as refs. that week. I happened to be the referee in question that was doing the Carlos and Jimmy match that day. Carlos was getting the better of Jimmy in the beginning of the match.Carlos was leading early. Then Jimmy started his act and started doing things to slow down Carlos. Carlos was attempting a shot from Jimmys view that may have been questionable. Jimmy asked me to look at the hit.Carlos stated to me ,theres plenty of space between those balls. Which with my best memory there was. Ideally this was my first time officiating a tournament of this caliber. So I did look at the hit out of fairness. I advised Jimmy the hit was good. They had been jabbing back and forth. So Scott game over and provided assistance in the matter. Jimmy ended up coming back and winning the match. The fight started after that and I wasnt there for that. I agree, that both should have been kicked out of the Open that year.

Carlos provoked Jimmy with his statement like that.Anytime a player asks for referee the other player has to keep quiet and the referee has to come and
watch the shot.Carlos is NOT a SAINT and I do not care for him.

A Great Guy...

I'll put my little piece of information out there as well. I don't think any player in the age range of Nick, Jimmy, Ronnie, Keith, etc., has been an angle throughout their pool playing career. It's easy to mess someone's reputation up over one single event, or rumor. Maybe people forget what kind of life you had to lead to play pool and get your nut back in the old days. Sometimes they had to do things that weren't so great to keep eating- otherwise, they would have jobs, and you wouldn't look up their great feats as a player anyhow. As much as people would like to believe that a 'pro' player should carry themselves, or act in this or that way, it's just not like that. Maybe now, or in the near future they will be able to represent themselves that way. Back to what I was saying... A lot of the old school players robbed, dumped, double dumped, steered their partners real bad. It still happens today. This is not a kick to any of them, and I don't mean it to be JAM when I bring up Keith's name either. But those players of long ago (in my opinion) are conducting themselves in the most professional manner that they have ever been. These players have also been dead broke so many times, having to be helped by joe blow, that they seem to dole out pool information more readily now. I have heard some funny stories from Jimmy- ones that anyone of you would have ran out and bought the book if it were in print, yet decide what kind of person he was by it. Jimmy is a one of a kind guy- very very intelligent, and has tons of charisma. If anyone didn't like him, I would bet it would be his opponent, because he was known to gloat and have a good time when playing. I'm sure there are a couple people out there that don't like me too much, but when I'm playing, and there is a disagreement, I'm sure as hell going to stick up for myself as well. As for Jimmy's site- I think there were a lot of situations that were out of his control, that he has made right with everyone, or at least attempted to. He is a plethora of knowledge, and someone that anyone can learn from. JMHO

I agree that he is not a Saint. But he has Game... but i think if you were in Carlos situation and under the same circumstances you just might react the same way as Carlos. Then again, you might not have let the earlier incident drop like he did...But like they say.. everybody has their own little cross to bear....................mike

If you think we are bad now, you should have seen us 25 yrs ago. People today think that I am a gentleman pool player, and fun to play with. When I was hustling, I would burn your house down if it could help me win.

Anyone that likes the cues that Joe Gold makes (Cognoscenti) would likely agree .

Hi, WilleeCue! :) Great to see you posting. Hope all is well with you and yours. Keith is still playing with his Willee cue, never leaves home without it! :D

To stay on topic of the thread, I can't imagine the tournament trail without Jimmy Reid. Yet, he's been MIA in recent times. I do know he has responsibilities at home which may prevent him from traveling.

However, knowing that he lives about a couple hours from Louisville, I hope he can make the trek to the upcoming Derby City Classic. He is a hoot to be around, funny as can be, and the trait I admire most is his inherent nature to be postive-thinking. It's an asset when you're in combat.

Jimmy Reid has had a strong influence on many a player, and to this day, Keith still considers him as a mentor when he was developing his game. This picture was taken at the 2003 Derby City Classic.

Hey Freddy - you may have covered this in your book (I ordered it but it hasn't arrived yet), but how would you rate Denny Searces vs Jimmy as a pay ball snooker player? One of my worst beatings ever came from Denny, playing him golf on a 6X12 at Cochran's. I remember at one point they barred him from the 6X12 payball game cause he was so dominant. I always thought that guy had as much raw talent as just about anyone I've ever seen. Back to Jimmy - the times I met him he was a great guy. As to all the rumors about people: I hope whoever starts these things was around in the 60's and 70's so at least they will have some knowledge of what things were like back then. The whole country was in turmoil, drugs were everywhere, "live for today" was the blueprint, and lots of us did lots of things we're not real proud of. To have this stuff bandied around 30 years later, without firsthand knowledge, is kinda reckless IMO. How about if anyone wants to start a rumor about somebody, go to WWW.OPRAH.COM.

Jimmy Reid

I've met Jimmy a few times in the S.F. area, and he has always been a real class act.. As for his playing, I'm sure that he is not up to the level that he was 20 or 30 years ago. But in that reguard, the last time I saw him play, he ran all over T-REX in a high stakes one pocket match. Word to the wise, If you play him for the cash bring your very best A game..

Denny and Jimmy playing payball, was probably a tossup. If I had to like someone in that match, it would be Jimmy. I just like his bull-doggedness. Denny had plenty natural talent and played all games good including a little 3 cushion. (of course I robbed him playing banks in Detroit, but all other games I needed odds) To those that look down at the shenanigans of the 60s & 70s,
that's tough sh*t, cause we did get have big fun, brothers.

Tap-tap-tap.

I wasn't too much into pool then, wish I was, but I think your statement applies to those times in general. I would also add that many of us did some things we were quite proud of. We may have been naive and over-optimistic about the true nature of mankind, but we had noble aspirations. Damn shame that people aren't the noble creatures we had hoped. As I slide into old age I still hold out hope for mankind, but not like I did back then.
Peace brother. :D

Jimmy Reid is one who has helped my playing the most with his DVD's and web site. (Along with Dr. Daves DVD.)

He takes you through a runout and explains what he is doing with each shot and why.

So I learned what I *should* be trying to do.

And knowing what you should be trying to do when a beginner will go a long way toward improving your game years later. You spend several years doing what Jimmy does, trying to do these things, and slowly being able to do them.

And his videos are *realistic*. He misses shots or position, then tells you what to do. And this is real life. You miss a shot or get out of position.

So I was most pleased that he did not show a video of "perfect runouts" which had the mistakes edited out. I am not perfect and need to know what to do when I mess up!

Jimmy Reid

Jimmy Reid doesn't know me from any other pool player on this planet, but he took the time to strike up a conversation with me while we were both playing in a small tournament on the upstairs bar tables at the Derby City one or two years ago. He is different, that is for sure, but I found him interesting and very knowledgeable. As for him not playing anymore, he played in the same tourney I did, and he did pretty well. I also saw him play in the Music City on a couple of occassions. No, he is not the world beater he once was, but he is still very very good. I would put him up against any regional-level champ and give him a good chance of winning in a game of 9 ball on a bar table. That's not too bad for a man his age that doesn't take the game as seriously as many others do nowadays. Hey, in my book Jimmy is a former Champ that I respect and admire. I would love to see him actually play in the US Open again (not just sign up and forfeit the matches). If he doesn't win a game, I wouldn't care. He earned my respect many years ago, and he will always have it.
