All,

About three months ago I bought the Joe Tucker racking secrets DVD. In short, awesome. Since I started using it I have been able to improve my control because I am confident about how the rack will break. My question to all of you...should tournaments be rack your own and spot the 9 on the break? I recently played in a pro event and in my first match I was able to consistantly make a wing ball and control the cb (rack your own). Since I am not a fan of cheating I was careful not to make the 9 ball break possible. Then in the second match my opponent refused to do race your own and he made 3 or 4 balls every break (I don't slug rack) and yet he was terrible at racking and I struggled each time. Even thought I pointed out the errors he was not able to give me more than one good rack a set.

So how about it? Anyone else have an opinion about the rack and how tourney's should address it? I like the format in the US Open personally...break box included.

may need to study the video a little more

I need to study the video more myself but after just understanding the basic concepts without the details I am glad to get "poor" racks. Any rack that has uneven lines of force in it can be exploited. I have more trouble doing something with a tight rack if I hit the headball.

Just as an aside, I find it hard to believe that anyone playing in a pro tourney didn't know how to rack or couldn't. You were being deliberately slug racked. That is a near certainty.

I'd like to see tapped racks, as they do it in Europe. Takes all the scamming and inconsistancy out of the break.

Imagine if people had to set their own pin racks in bowling

Tapping does some slight damage to the cloth, but it doesn't affect play too much I think.

The next question becomes if we should rack the balls in a set order.

Perhaps 10-ball is even better, as 9-ball with tapped racks is just too easy to make a ball.

Such reasons are why many events are alternating breaks now. Joe's stuff is top notch for any serious player.

Perhaps it is just me, but I feel that the game should be won or lost because of the play after the break. The way I see it, you SHOULD make a ball on the break. The better player will runout more and just play the game better. If the better player isn't making balls on the break, especially due to deliberate slug racking, than that makes the game more of a joke than a match. Nothing bothers me more than racking for someone who has a terrible break and watching them draw the cue ball three or four rails around the table and make 4 balls. Then they rack for me and I hit a perfect snap and plant the cb in the dead centre of the table only to see the pack hardly move. Yes we should all check our racks, and yes, some tables are pretty screwed up so very hard to rack. IMHO the game is designed to be won or lost after the break. I am one who would love to see 9 ball breaks(although exciting) simply have the 9 respotted.

Joe is awesome at explaining how you can make your rack better for you, but also how to rack for others as to not have 9's hammered in on you as much. I am a simple AAA working towards a semi-pro ranking. I am not as talented as many who post here, but I still feel that if I lose I should lose to a better player, not a cheap rack.
