I remember one time I got myself involved in a head-to-head Tonk game with a gentleman.

He came to my house poker game with a "friend" of mine. The poker game concluded, and this guy challenged me heads-up in the game of Tonk.

Back then, I was a pretty good Tonk player and so I bit his kind proposition. The game went forth, and before I knew it, I was stuck a couple dimes. This was a foreign feeling for me to be stuck a couple dimes at that time, and I began to feel sick to my stomach, but I couldn't quit, being stuck so much.

And then it happened. I noticed the guy had SIX cards in his hand instead of FIVE. I looked at his hand long and hard to make sure, and then I confronted him, stating, "I want to count the cards in the deck."

All of a sudden, I heard a small noise as he dropped a card to the floor, and then I knew I had been had. It was the most money I ever lost on my own, and I won't ever forget it. It took me a long time to recover, more so emotionally than financially.

Paybacks are hell, and I did get my revenge against the so-called "friend" who brought this gentleman to my house game, but that is the topic for another thread!

An amateur move but very effective if you can get away with it. You can counter this move by going down quick in Tonk. Watch him scramble to hide the cards. What they usually do is just throw them in the muck quick.

( I guess I'll just go ahead and tell what I read somewhere else. My poor pal Joey not only came in 14th in the big tournament played at his 'home room', but he went on to come out on the short end of TWO 500 jellybean sets. Like Johnny Cash, my wife and I have been dressed in black these past two days while mourning Joey's loss. I know Joey well and I'm worried about him at present. I hope that he doesn't do anything drastic. I'm thinking INTERVENTION...... imo )

I just realized that JoeyA. came in 13th and not 14th. I'm starting to feel better already and I hope that Joey doesn't jump off the Huey P. Long bridge as Scotty Townsend did (well, Scotty DID get paid for it).

Smorgasbored you devil dog - you. You have to spread the news about me taking a bath. Well I guess it is OK, since you are a devil dog and all. Everyone gets a bath every now and then. I got beat fair and square, just a better player than me is all. NO sharking, no complaints, my opponent was a gentleman and I admire his style and ability. My opponent was just the better player that day and that's all there was too it. Perhaps there will be another day and I will have a chance to redeem myself.

You played . . . and came back for seconds when you lost the first set. That is more than many would do for a nickel a set. I'm sure you will get even with whomever it was somewhere down the road. Seeing who was at the tournament I have my suspicions who you tangled with but I won't voice them in public.

(a). Thank God nothing really happened here. Loosing a dime should be a regular happening for any serious player -- I'm not sure that constitutes news.

(b). Wow, a lot of Tonk players on the board -- anyone up for some cheap $5 / $10 or something?

(c). Did I really just hear TWO people tell stories about getting conned in a Tonk game, and paying up?... That doesn't make sense, at all. There are some holes in those stories, revamp them, and give us the real details.

I lost about $500 in a game of Tonk to a well known local short-stop about 2 years back. We were playing $5 / $10 or $10/$20 (I forget) and he was just pounding my head in.. he must've dropped one out of every 4 hands.. and was always winner. I figured, I'm either way out-classed, or there is some foul play, so I quit.
If I had any proof that he was cheating, there is NO way he would've walked out with a dime of my money.
Turns out the guy was just a pretty good cards player and has played regularly for the cash, for many years.
I wasn't bad then, and have gotten better, maybe it's time for a re-match....... this time I might bring my own cards

It's five card rummy. You can "knock" or go down at any time and if you use all your cards you get paid double. It's a gambling game that has been most popular in poolrooms and jail cells for decades.

Buffalo's tournament seems to be growing nicely. More people showing every event and coming from greater distances. I didn't know who that was under that curly blond mop playing Scotty, I'll make a note.

The tournament gets bigger each time. There were 56 players but it got over with pretty quick and everyone got a chance to get some sleep as Buff the Stuff keeps the tournament moving FAST w/ races to 7/5 DE..

Oh yeah, did I mention that a Pizza Man deliverying a truckload of pizzas to the pool hall that night received a hernia for his efforts. Yeah, Buff paid for it all. You know the guy is a class act. He definitely knows how to run a pool hall & tournament. He even hired an assistant tournament director to help coordinate the matches. Joy did a great job.

Each tournament it seems, a NEW out of town player wins the tournament. I guess that is why it keeps getting bigger each time, besides the Calcutta is going out of sight. At least a local bought David T in the Calcutta.

I am thinking that we are going to have to cut it off at 64. We had 56 players this last time. I think I will talk to Buffabout cutting it off at 64. It is very successful because of the generous money that is paid out and added as well as the fact that it is a one day tournament. I doubt if it would be as popular if it went to 2 days. What are your thoughts about making it a 2 day tournament? Personally I don't like it for the out of town guests because of their additional expenses but those who come to gamble stay overnight anyway. Most I think, come for the one day tournament, shooting a toothpick at a lumberyard, and yes there is more lumber in the yard.

I think keeping it at a one day event with a limit of 64 is a great idea. Keeps everyone happy. Pays well and doesn't take forever. However, I would see it better as a race to 7 on both sides instead of 5 on the losers. An extra 2 games per match wouldn't take up too much time.
