Hey Shane,

How much is it going to cost with ground shipping in the US? How fast is the turnaround + delivery after June 28?

thanks,
ray

The DVD is $29.95, you have many shipping options available (I would guess many people will choose USPS priority mail for $4.05)

If you spend $50 (IOW by other items for $20) the shipping is free in the USA and Canada.

We expect to have plenty of the DVD's from John on the 28th, orders will ship the same day you order or the next business day at the latest.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

...now that is a pool player

Ahhh, the dvd came in the mail today. Lucky me has to work for several more hours before being able to watch it fully. Did get in a quick peek, looks good, sounds great!

Shane:
I received my copy yesterday afternoon and unlike you, I have not been able to set aside the time to watch entire DVD. I did manage to view about 15 minutes of it last night and wanted to immeditaely go shoot some straight pool. While the overall quality of the "filming" is not up to a major production quality DVD, the information from the commentary is PRICELESS. I had spoke to John while ordering the DVD and he in no way misrepresented the quality aspect of this production, but it is every bit and then some worth the minor investment.

Here's hoping that he makes another as he had mentioned perhaps a DVD devoted to break shots exclusively.

I ordered the DVD from John Schmidt and received it very quickly and watched it last night.

In February 2006, John gave himself a goal of playing straight pool 2 hrs a day for one week to try and capture a 150 ball run on camera. In his words "On day 2 I received the rolls I needed and exceeded my goal and ran 245 and caught it all on tape"

John did this in a friends garage in Milton, Florida on a Brunswick Gold Crown IV with 4 and 5/8's pockets on new Simonis 860 cloth and "clean Brunswick Centennial Balls"

I have to say that I learned more about straight pool watching this DVD then I have in my whole life! John setup a home video camera and after the fact, did audio commentary through the entire run so that you can get an insight into his mind about the run, and straight pool in general. He talks about mistakes he made, reasons for shooting certain shots and lots of mention and tips about the key balls and break balls. The video quality is okay, sometimes difficult to tell which ball is which but John does a good job of letting you know which ball he is talking about as he says "I am just a guy in a garage with a video camera"

John has a very good voice for audio commentary and makes watching the run very enjoyable and interesting.

It is interesting to note that John mentions that the first shot he shoots to begin the run is a break ball shot that he learned from another AZ billiards member Leil Gay at the derby city classic one year (go AZ!)

I also like the fact that John took a sharpie and drew a line around the rack on the felt so that it is easier to see the exact location of the rack area when deciding on the keyball during the run.

He also mentions Thomas Engert, Mosconi and his own 400 ball run (interesting stuff)

The entire run takes 1 hr and 7mins. After watching I wanted to go play straight pool, I feel I now know more about the game and I have a nice 245 ball run that I can review anytime I want.

Worth the $$?....absolutely

I think thats one of the best things about it is the fact that it motivates you to want to play some straight pool!

My DVD got here, very quickly. Wow John! Thanks for taking the time to record this. There is a wealth of information on the video. The commentary is excellent and so many subtle things can be noticed by watching close. Anyone that hasn’t already ordered one …do what ever you have to do to raise the money, pawn your mother-in-law’s wedding ring send your kids to bed with out dinner for a few days or whatever it takes. If you care about 14.1 you won’t be sorry.

Straight Pool

Are there other games meant to be played on a pool table?

I ordered my copy just a couple days ago and even the anticipation of getting it has me practicing in the basement. I just broke my high run of 42 with a 55 tonight! Apparently the dvd is sooooo good that it works even BEFORE you watch it!

Now that is funny!

John is a great player, I must say I was a little disappointed, basically you just watch him run balls.

The commentary was smooth I just expected more technical information.
