Johnston City

Thanks DtR. You and Rubyron went to work on this like others had done with the Zapruder film! Good work.

I never heard of Johnny Edwards.

That is Johnny Edwards in the photo, a very good player our of Kentucky. He was road partners with Johnnie Taylor, who played just under him. Edwards wore glasses, even when he played. Taylor was bald like me.

When Evelyn was dating fatty back when they first met, they hooked up one night in a room above a business on main street and fats had his car parked out front. Evelyn said the next day when they left in Fattys new car (Convertible) there was a cigarette burn hole in the top, she told me that she flicked out her cigarette that night just before bed. (she never told him) Fatty loved "Fried Chicken" and Evelyns charm and pool action in Duquoin were the perfect combination for Fats to fall in love.

Hey Terry, Johnny Edwards was a legend around these parts (Kentucky) and a very fine player. I saw him when he was probably in his mid 60s and he still could dab it! His glasses where so thick, if you didn't know him you just had to play him! Check out Buddy Hall's biography on his encounter with Johnny(check the index for pages).

Now maybe I'm dreaming, but didn't you show me part of this when you were living in Aurora back in the early 90"s??????? Like I said, maybe i'm dreaming but this sounds familiar to me??!!

i do however remember the steak you prepared us, but my memory about food is always pretty good!!

Couldn't of been a better reason to have steak...yep I think your right, Fatty and the Greek took her to dinner before Evelyn/Fats dated, fatty asked/and did cut her steak for her, they both sat directly across from her in a booth, and she said each and every bite of steak their heads went up/down, this steak was bigger than a platter and 1/4'' thick Evelyn said.

Couldn't of been a better reason to have steak...I recorded this 2-28-96 so it had to be shortly thereafter. Early on Fatty and the Greek took her to dinner before Evelyn/Fats dated, fatty asked/and did cut her steak for her, they both sat directly across from her in a booth. This steak was bigger than a platter and 1/4'' thick Evelyn said and she said each and every bite of steak their heads went up/down.

I read this thread a few days ago and asked the gentleman that has been teaching me one pocket and straight pool about Johnston city and he talked for at least 2 hours. He has some great storys about johnston city. Mr. Don use to travel with Eddie Taylor when he went up north, because Mr. Don knew many places and players that were safer (Eddie was worried about winning money and not being able to leave with the money). He was traveling with Eddie when he won the 64 johnston city open and when he won the Stardust one pocket tournament. Mr. Don said the one pocket tournament killed a lot of action for Eddie because his face was in all the pool magazines.

Interesting story, Evan! What is Mr. Don's last name? Was he a stakehorse or a player?

Thanks~ Doc

His name is Don Guffey (I think I spelled it right) He was a player but not as good as the big guys. I dont know how well he played because he is so modest when I ask his high run he tells me he got lucky and ran a couple hundred a few times. He says he was a straight pool player but was also good at 9 ball. He didnt pick up one pocket until he was a little older and not on the road anymore.

I'll see if I can work something up, its a two hour interview of thier life, where they met, when his father died also, have video of fattys house with video of the area outside he kept his pets, he was quite impacting on my younger years and would always ask if you wanted a ride back to your hotel room or whatever and a smile/persona that stands alone.

That would be cool Bill.
Man those were the days for me. You, Dennis, Doc, the Road Players and then there was Fats waddling into Crazy Horse/Gatsby's or Itchys Stardust every so often to play a little 1-Pocket or Full Rack Banks. Don't care what anybody says Fats could play these two games. Saw him run out many a rack. He also played 3 Cushion. Little Sammy Elizer thought that was his best game. No money in it though. At least not on that crappy 9 foot AMF. Only saw him play 3C half dozen times when he was nice enough to play me N/C. Everytime I see one of the shots he taught me I can hear him "Can't lollypop this one"
