During the recent Predator 14.1 tourney I noticed at the end of every match that not a single pro screwed on joint protectors. One of the silliest gadgets going.

well as i see it joint protectors certanly cant hurt you.i use them

the pros dont have to pay for their equipment so i guess they dont care (except Ralf).i wouldnt care also if somebody gave me free cues shafts etc.

The reason why pro's might not screw on joint protectors at a tournament is due to playing again after their match. Thats one theory, the other is like prpavi said, some dont pay for their equipment.

I think having Joint Protectors is more of a styling of a cue when presented to other people, but to also protect the joint

Joint protectors are important if you insert the butt joint first (with some cases there are no choices). The also help to protect the shaft end on piloted joint.
not to mention will protect the edge of a wood/phenolic joint from chipping.
Uni-Loc joints can get locked with a bit of dirt so JP help there too.
When I play in tournaments I don't put the JP between matches but when I'm done they sure go back on....

maybe they are like me....i didnt need them the first 25 years i played pool, why start now......

I use them in my case because if I don't have them on the butt and shafts shift around a bit more than I would like. With the J/P's on they don't shift around much at all.

I look at it this way, Maybe they are kinda silly to some but if you have a expensive cue why not use them to protect your investment.

although if your idea of a case is 2 rubber bands then skip the joint protectors

A shaft slid out of my bag once when I thought it was closed. If the JP had not been on it would have dinged the collar up really nice. Now I just have a JP with a nice scuff on it. I guess you don't need them if you never have an accident....but not really the type of thing you can predict.

Most pros don't put on joint protectors because they expect to play again later. I'm no pro, but I only put on joint protectors on my cues when I transport them. In tourneys I've played in and on league nights, I show up, take off the joint protectors, put the cue together, and start playing. In between rounds, I either keep the cue together and play on a practice table, or I disassemble the cue and stick it in my case with no joint protector, because I have a match later. I only put the joint protectors on when I'm done for the day.

I used to think the same way. I dont need those things. Just extra work.
That is till the day that I forgot to lock the lid of my case. Someone asked
me about the bottom of my case and the type of feet that were on there.
When I turned the case to look at the bottom my cue slid out and fell to
the floor. The butt slid out with the pin falling first since I stored the butt
with the pin up. Needless to say, when the cue hit the ground, it bent the
pin. If I would have had a joint protector on the butt, there would have
been a scuff on the JP, and maybe a couple of scratchse on the butt
section at worst case. I now always put them on, and I'll never forget to
lock the lid of the case no matter what. I dont think that they are so
important for the shafts, but the butt for sure.

JP is an opinion of the user. I don't see why extra protection for your beloved cue is wrong or silly. That is like saying to some people, an action cue case holds your cue, why spend the dough to get a Justis case or etc.

Pros have sponsors and don't have to pay for their equipment. Before JP's came around, cues were just fine, so I see where you are coming from.

I know one incident that while my case was open and my case tipped over, the ones with the JP didn't get nicked, but the shaft without the JP had a nick at the edge of the joint due to not having a JP.

50/50

Joint protectors are good but I do not use them. I have a top loading cue case. (Swift appox 25 yrs old) still looks brand new. I always keep it standing up right. The main reason why I do not use them. It just seems annoying taking them off & on. I always seem to drop one of them and they go rolling under a table. Very annoying. I would use them if I was traveling. But.... they are a good thing.

I use JP's all the time. I bought my first nice cue(for me), a lower $$ Muecci back in the 90's and some how bent the joint pretty bad(don't know how). Years ago I bought the Predator SP with the green veneers and there was a ???, something hidden in the QR pin that took three men to carefully unscrew it(not fun). Ever since then, I have used JP's and not one problem-o (knock on wood). That's ok though, my wife married me because I'm silly. Ron :nanner::happydance::smash::withstupid:

Don't care if they are silly or not. The good folks at Jacoby engraved the tops of mine with their logo guy (see below) and Jacoby above and Custom Cues below him....I like 'em

I suspect they were invented because somebody damaged their cue and was looking for a way to help protect the joint surfaces. I use them for that purpose and in some cases they do look great.

I think that since they are available it's silly not to use them. That's why I wax my car, buy health insurance, put the cues in hard tubes, put a cover on the pool table, wear gloves when I work in the yard, use condoms, wear boots in the winter, wear sunglasses, and so on ad infinitum. :groucho:
